Asking for date of birth at interveiw

The last few interveiws I have been on asked for my date of birth on a seperate form "for the backround check". I am a woman at an age where I do not like this question. Is this something new? I thought they were not permitted to ask for date of birth until they hire you or at the very least make a job offer, so I left that part blank on my last application. On the previous one, I wrote it in and never heard from the company again. Is it acceptable if it is seperate from the job application?

In the US that's illegal, unless a job offer has been made first. A company cannot do a background check on you prior to a job offer; the offer can be contingent on a successful outcome of the background check but the offer comes first. |

ok thanks, it seems like a lot of comapnies are doing this now, but sometimes saying it is voluntary, sometimes saying age will not be considered in the hiring process. |

I'm about to retrain as an electrician, after 12 years of working in call centres. After a 6 month course I'll be able to start an apprenticeship.
I'm 32, and I'll be competing against people who have just left high school. I intend to use my age as a selling point - I've outgrown all the silliness of my younger competitors (I know it's a gross generalisation) - I'm settled down, etc.
Here in New Zealand it's illegal for an employer to discriminate based on age, but I doubt it's illegal for an applicant to use it as a selling point ;)

In my field (education) a background check form, which asks for date of birth, is part of the application process. To me this enables age discrimination and it highly unfair. Most places where I have interviewed have made no attempt at confidentiality with this form. I have even been asked to leave it on secretaries' desks for anyone to see. As an employer, I have made it a point to give the form to the applicant with a separate envelope with the name of the HR director on it. Then I ask them to complete the form, insert it into the envelope and seal it. I make it very clear to them that I do not want access to that information. How a prospective employer treats that information is an important indicator of what type of boss he or she will be. If they are careless with my confidential info, I expect they will be careless with upholding the intention of laws which protect my rights. Unfortunately, in a hiring situation, it is risky to "be difficult" about these things. |
