I manage one of 5 stores owned by the same couple in town. The problem is their daughter, my boss, is not very fond of me. The other stores in town are managed by friends of hers from high school. When she does work in my store I feel as though she manages not only me but my crew, directing them to do things clearly against company procedure and policy because it is easier. I am tired of having to clean up the mess of bad habits after she has left. I am also tired of the bad example she sets while she is working. While she is there I feel like she cuts my legs right out from under me and feel very ineffective. I have worked at the other stores and have seen her interaction with the other managers. She shows them respect as being in control instead of taking over. I thought about going to her parents but think that will only make the situation into a pissing contest. I have kissed butt for five years now but will never be one of the Friday night drinking buddies. How do I get through that I know my job and get her to let me do it even when she is around? I need to figure something out as I have a hunch she will be taking full control of the company soon when her parents fully retire and my patience is wearing thin.

Reply: Did you receive a company handbook policy of the company rules. DO they have one? If so, request one. Read through it and see if she has violated any of the company policies pertaining to you. Then keep record of them. Otherwise, hang tough.

Reply: ugh, i hate working for family businesses. No matter what happens, it always seems like they band together against you. It just isn't fair.
