Boss's publicity taking advantage of non-profit organization

Has anyone effectively dealt with a self-absorbed organization Director that coordinates company response/staff abilities/and purposely subverts company objectives in order to benefit his/her own personal publicity?

I am a non-profit humane society worker. The public have been subjected to lies about our "rescue" involvement, the number of animals that our Director personally rescued (stolen) after Katrina, the number of pets that were euthanized soon after we received them (well before contracts with official agencies permitted), and the minute percentage of animals that were returned to thier owners.

Lots of mistakes happened during Katrina response, but our organization did not follow proscribed protocal and most of the staff and I are fearful of what our Director is capable of now that she has ties to national agencies as desperate for publicity as she is.

Our Executive Director's demand for personal media attention has increased our fear of dismissal. We are all at-will workers and she doesn't have to prove cause for any of us to lose our jobs. I'm taking an extreme risk by publishing this disscusion topic.

Does anyone have experience subverting or preventing publicity-hungry directors from usurping company objectives?

Reply: Hi Ann, I worked for a bad boss at a non-profit, and I want to caution you: be careful of taking your documented incidents to your Board of Directors. I did - and got fired.

Reply: Give it time. If this is such a high profile organization and she's seeking publicity, she'll get more than she can handle. Keep your nose clean, document any wrongdoing and write lots of memo's describing why your doing something and who's ordering you to do it. For example, you say animals were put to death before you were legally able to do so, then write a memo to her stating "Per your instructions, ___ animals euthanized on (date), before the official date of _____" When she tells you not to do this, explain you merely need to create a papertrail for your own safety and continue to write memos to her "On (date), you requested I no longer put in writing details you would rather be kept from general knowledge. Therefore, I will personally hand such memos to you at _______" After a while, she'll get the message that you are not going to cover her butt for her. If she fires you, you then have the papertrail necessary to blow the whistle. Needless to say, keep copies of everything in a safe place away from your office!

Reply: Document, document, document....I know this is tedious at times but it will prove itself in the end. Figures don't lie....find a board member you can trust and show your proof... Di
