How to deal with a boss that like my showing-off, schmoozing colleagues better than me?

my co-workers are all very good at showing off and schmoozing with my boss. In comparison, I look like the quiet, less interesting person in the office although I work very hard. What should I do to defend my position, to shine?

Forget showing off, but you need to work on that schmoozing. Not to make yourself shine, but to make your boss shine! Learn to banter, and use humor. And don't forget to feed the egos of your co-workers too. The trick isn't to find ways to make yourself look important but to make sure the people who interact with you leave feeling valued and important. Do this, and you'll be the most interesting and popular person at your workplace. |

I agree with Karra. Do your work, but look for ways you can take centerstage once in a while. Are you good at making flyers? Maybe you could offer to make up flyers for someone who is not so artistic. Are you an organizer? Maybe you could help organize the supply closet or copy room. Maybe make cookies on the weekends and bring them in so that everyone in the office starts to expect "ycd's cookies". It's the little things that matter and the fact that you do your job well. The big brown-nosers will eventually screw something up or get caught not doing their jobs and will go away. |

I'm not big on the cookie thing... you have to be really sincere to pull something like that off without looking cheesy. However, supporting your 'team' without being the bookworm who does everyone's homework, is a good start. You don't need to be comical, not even conversational. Just be there, involved to some degree and ALWAYS BE SURE TO GET AND TAKE THE CREDIT FOR SOMETHING YOU'VE DONE!!!
Use people's names. We all like to hear our own names. Most of us don't even hear our names on a daily basis.
Find equal ground with co-workers (one or two to start - for practice). Do you like to golf? Watch 24? Try to hit on something you actually have an opinion about that someone else wants to hear. ALWAYS be sure to get their opinion first! You don't have to agree, but everyone likes to hear themselves talk. (I tease my guy friends with this: "Treat your co-workers like they're a girl your trying to date; Hang on every word, repeat the 'important' things and develop a non-threatening position to foster 'discussions'."
Happy travels!
