Bosses who abuse but don't know it.

I have been working for a boss who thinks it is perfectly OK to make promises and break them, force employees to work 8 hours a day seven days a week for months on end, give one employee everything she wants while the rest of us have to fight to get what we need. When we confront her she denies all of it.

I am on the verge of quitting!

Reply: Quit! If she isn't able to see what's happening or doesn't care what you think about what's happening, nothing is going to change. Either change your attitude or leave - nothing you do is going to change another person.

Reply: CONFRONT HER AGAIN! Do not use her gender as a basis though! Women (like me) can feel very defensive when you use words like 'unfair' & 'emotional'. Do use phrases like 'we need you to be reliable and consistant'. Ask her if there is a task that someone can take on that would make her job easier. She obviously doesn't have a full grasp of what her position entails. The cost of doing business is quite high if you're paying that much in OT!!!

Reply: Get everyone but the favored employee together for a private meeting. If the situation is what you say it is, everyone will agree with you. Draft a mass resignation letter. Do not end the meeting without having everyone sign it. Have everyone in the group seek out a new employer (ideally a major competitor) for the entire team en masse. When you find one, get everyone hired. Wait for a business-critical time period. Have everyone show up as usual. Then hand her the letter, resign en masse and move to the competition. Leave her in the lurch. Be sure to spell out exactly why everyone is quitting. This tactic works. Certain employers, who shall remain anonymous, have deliberately used it against competitors with great success.
