One of my managers at work is starting to realy cause me problems i believe his negativity towards me and my co-workers is effecting our ability to do your job effectivly and because im not doing my job good enough for this reason hes having more of a go at me? today he pulled me to one side and said "if you dont sort yourself out then your going to be spending more time on till" this came to me as somewhat of a shock as it was totaly out of the blue i had done anything wrong all day apart from asking for the keys to remove something wrong from an order which he gets aggitated with me about. then when i went to leave at 4pm he pulled me in the office and said to me "Youre the most bone-idle and obtuse person ive ever met" it was at this time i started to just buckle inside, it quite upset me but i didnt want to show it. im only 18 and this is the first job ive had i cant simply quit the job as i need to money to run my car and cover my college costs etc what can i do? ive considered writing a letter to the Franchisee in a hope it will get the matter noticed i dont want to go to any of the other managers about it? one other manager was present at the time when he said the second reamrk and caught me before i left after the guy who said the remark had left and asked if i was alright he said himself that it was a bit harsh and he said he would have a work with him about it but somehow i dont think this will stop it. im not the only person who sufferes this kind of attitude i believe if it doesnt stop im going to be forced out my job? ive been reading up on the net about employment tribunals but i dont belive i have a case yet? can anyone suggest to me something i can do?

Can your manager behave this way? Yes. Should he? No. You're 18 and don't have much work experience so you aren't going to know that in your work life you're going to have nurturing managers and awful manangers (sorry you've had to experience one so negative so darn early). You're going to have to learn to read people and deal with them with what works best for you. I realize you depend on this income for school costs but one solution is to get another job (I'm sure you've already thought thru this solution). If this is not an option, then you need to start telling yourself he doesn't know your values/character and you are not what this person says you are. Stand back and take a constructive view of yourself. Even though his comments are WAY out of line, ask yourself if you're doing/saying something that's fueling this for him. Dont' get me wrong, no matter how you behave, there's no excuse for belittling people. I had a boss years ago that used to employ the ole military tactic of "tearing them down to build them up". Unless you're in the armed forces, that style doesn't work well. This person probably views employees like you as disposable. In other words, he feels stuck in his job while you're just passing thru and he may resent this. I've experienced this attitude a great deal when I first moved to my community and I did alot of temp work. Those folks felt locked in place while I still had opportunities in front of me. The bare bones here?
1. Look at yourself and make sure you're doing what you're expected to do - BE CONSTRUCTIVE OF YOURSELF. Yeah, sometimes it's difficult to look
at ourselves.
2. Look for another job if this is too much hassle - you need to focus on your first job and that's continuing your education. If this job is too distracting, go elsewhere.
3. Look for a mentor - that 2nd manager (at least from your brief discription) sounds like a decent manager. Look to that person. |

Homer,
Of course he can do this. The real question is SHOULD he? My answer to that is no. It will reduce the effectiveness of the staff and cause the business to be less than it should. You should go to his boss, whether it be a higher manager or the franchise, if the boss is the owner. Put it in terms of a poor business practice. |

For the first comment, yes, your boss can hire or fire you at will, which means if you don't have a union, he can fire you for whatever. However, when he makes a comment like this out of the blue, your response should be, "I was not aware I am having difficulty keeping up, , ,could you please tell me what you would like me to change?" By being respectful, you will put him in his place and he will have to respond to your request or look like a jerk. The second comment was out of line and he should be reported to his supervisor, again in a respectful tone. A letter would be great, as it leaves a paper trail - the person receiving it has to respond.
