Dealing with a Liar and Harasser

My boss was hired as a favor and knows nothing about the industry. I was hired to do the majority of the work and teach him the basics of the business. I knew this coming into it and was excited about the opportunity and really looked forward to working with him as he and I clicked during our initial meetings, etc. His job was to go and speak with a set constituency and work solely with them. I was promised that I would be in receptive environment since the reversed work relationship could be somewhat ackward. Not only does he talk over me, interrupt me or just plainly not listen, he lies to people about what he's doing and even goes to such lengths and "creating" appointments and numbers to show as proof that he's really doing his job. It's become a contest with him. If I say I've met with someone, he'll always do me one better. If on my annual report I have reported 'x' number of appointments, he'll have 'x' number +1. He withholds important information and when I ask him questions that are work and project related, he jumps all over me. I've discussed this situation with my next level supervisor who agrees with my observations as he's had the same experience but yet nothing is being done. I just moved here a year ago and it's a rural area. I am in a very specialized field and while I am seeking other employment, it's been a slow road. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that he was charged with sexual harrassment towards ME which began the first day I got here. How he is still my "boss", I will never know. How do I survive while still here?

Reply: He's afraid of you. He is threatened by your power over him so has set about to undermine you at every turn. Turn the tables - make yourself unthreatening in a way he can handle. Compliment him, tell him what a great job he's doing and how far he has come since starting. The reason no one wants to do anything is because this person was hired as a 'favour'. Who decided that? It's much easier not to do anything, so you have to take control of the situation yourself.
