    Pushy Boss

Work in a small family owned business. The boss's wife made the comment that she can say or do anything to us because she is the boss and the boss's wife-she is constantly putting people down and if you happen to talk to a customer that she does not like she will walk by and literally make a point of pushy you-customers have noticed this and have refused to come in when she is working. Cannot afford to quit my job-like most of the people I work with. Is there anything that a person can do to deal with someone like this? It is getting so I hate to go to work each day. I have been told she has very low esteem so she needs to belittle us. Would like help in dealing with her? Thank you and I am glad I found your site.

Reply: Pre, There is nothing you can do to change this person. All you can do is change how you react to all the rude things she does to you. Getting angry doesn't work. I've been there. Try to stay focused on what you need to do and keep as far away from her as possible. Good luck to you.

Reply: Has the boss seen this behavior with customers? If so, what is his reaction? A fine line, but since you are their for customer service you may approach him privately and ask him how he wants you to handle it all. If he shrugs with a "that's just the way she is" attitude then you will not get far at all--other than as far as it takes to go to your next job.

Reply: i would play the "stupid" route with the real boss.Ask him if you have any chance for advancement, because you feel that you are doing something weong--as in possibly alienating customers.Name names of customers.Perhaps owner will have enough sense to ask them why they avoid the premises at certain times.
