boss just stabbed me

hi all: here is the meat of it. We have had a high turnover in the past year. Some people have been fired, some quit. I have worked there 18 years, and for most it, have kept the dept going by myself. I get called to a meeting, where I am told by my boss, whom I was personal friends with, that I can have union representation. This was the knife. I have known the all these years. At the meeting they tell me I am a hostile person, and basically trash me. It was one of the worst days of my life. This came out of the blue. I know they are looking to blame someone, so it is me, but I thought I knew where I stood with these people. Now, it is so hard working there. I don't know when the other shoe will drop. I had NO CLUE this was going to happen. Oh, and btw, I completely reject what they have said- to illustrate the last person who left, left because of health reasons, and called after the meeting, wanting her job back. What do I do? This has me physically sick. sickofit

Having a high turn over could be because of bad management or the job itself. It sounds like you have put alot of blood, sweat and tears into your job. You should be proud that you have 18 yrs. of dedication. As for being personal friends with management, this can be a touchy situation itself. Sometimes to much information (TMI) can pass between people and fear itself shows it's face. To have a union rep. with you at the meeting is to make sure that management does'nt step outside it's bounderies and represent you.
Today's companies are looking to down size, eliminate cost no matter what. It is a doggy dog world out there and employees tend to be treated as numbers and not as humans. Have you considered seeking other employment? Life is to short to be miserable. Sometimes it is better to cut your ties and move on to BIGGER and BETTER! |

Although this is a shock, you do sound defensive in tone. If prior to this meeting you have outwardly expressed this in the workplace, your associates and/or management are likely to read this as "hostility". Keep to business. In a calm environment, go to your ex-friend boss and ask about how he or she perceives you as hostile. Try to get to specifics. You can then promote ways how YOU will change. At least you might get progress on learning about hidden agendas that are not about you and are things, probably, that are keeping the bosses up at night. If outside of you, this may bring some awareness that they are transferring. Good luck, but first look at yourself before you judge the boss. |

I'm thinking that if this guy is really hostile, it would have shown up before now with 18 yrs at the co. You are correct, you re being stabbed and my guess is that the boss is seeing his immortality and is seeking to make it out to upper mngmt to be you. What do you have to loose?...ask for a meeting with HR and upper mngmt, have a rep from union present and pose the above scenario. If only for clearing your name or getting insight as to whether they are forcing you to move on. The unknown is always the worst. They expect you to roll over and take it and it just doesn't make sense with your loyalty thus far. With your experience and a little assertion, who knows, you may be seen as a candidate for the bosses position if you stand up for yourself. In the meantime, give the job your best and keep your social life and conversations outside of the office. Also, seek out some therapy for your stress. It also can serve as proof of the possible unjustness you seem to be experiencing. |
