    mumbling boss

I work at an optometrists office. We only have 4 opticians, 1 office manager and 1 doctor that works in our small office. This manager is the least competent of all of us,even the 'new girl' in the office. but this isn't even what bothers all of us. In one word-she mumbles-incoherently alot of the time. I have told her to her face that we cannot hear her [that she talks too softly, is how i said it]. She said [hatefully] that i should ask her what she said or to repeat herself. I CAN NOT AND WILL NOT do this all day long when we are very busy taking care of patients. i have resorted to completely ignoring her-because im tire of asking her 'what did you say' all the time-but this results in our patients not being taken care of or mistakes, etc, etc. She has of late started mumbling to herself [yes, talking to herself]whenever no one else is around] Everyone in the office, including the Dr. agrees that this is a problem, but the Dr. doesn't deal with her directly and i don't think she's willing to talk to her. All of us opticians actually went above her head to complain about her ineptness and mumbling-we work in a retail optical setting-but they didn't really do anything about it. How would you handle this situation if you had to deal with her 8 hrs a day? Oh, by the way, the manager's personality is negative, a bit depressive, and she sure speaks up when her manager visits. Any suggestions would be helpful, as I've thought about leaving [even though i like my job and my coworkers) because I can't work side by side w/this woman any longer.

Reply: Have you spoken with HER manager about this problem? Who can actually discipline or terminate this employee? I'd ask Mumbler privately & point blank WHY does she speak loud & clear to HER manager but meanwhile everybody has to ask her to speak up constantly. Don't let her snake out of it with a lame answer. Don't accept "hateful" replies either- make it clear to her how you expect to be addressed PROFESSIONALLY & with no attitude when replied to & you will tolerate nothing less. (Yes, it's OK to address problems with co-workers directly/professionally yourself. I have. Don't always expect bosses to fix anything. Mostly they won't.) Keep asking the question 'til you break her down & get an answer. If she still mumbles, just say "speak up, please" "can't hear you" "too soft" or "HUH?" (which is really annoying) simple phrases, said repeatedly ad nauseum until you can hear what she said. Pound her with it, but speak with no attitude. Pester her with it 'til she herself gets sick of hearing it. Talking to herself in the office? What a nutjob !! She needs to go.
