Our company states we are not allowed to have food or drinks while we are working. We can consume beverages and food while we are on our break in a designated area. Our manager of 20 + years has been breaking this rule and has hidden a small refrigerator/freezer where he and all the other workers have been storing their food/beverages. The freezer part stated to freeze over so last week the manager took a screwdriver and a hammer to chip off the ice. The next morning the floor was wet from melted ice and chemicals. Apparently, he broke the pipe in there. Anyways, he sends an employee to go buy another fridge with their money. The employee called him and told him she found 3 different models. He told her to pick the one she liked. She told him it was $209 + tax - HE SAID THAT WAS FINE BC EVERYONE IS GOING TO CHIP IN FOR IT. Now he is charging the staff $5 each and $42 for the higher paid employees. WHY do we have to pay for something he broke? BUT he was really smart executing this... He made a lower paid staff pay for the refridge and he knows that if he paid for it himself it would be hard to ask for the money.

Many are upset BUT paid him in fear of what he'd say or do if they didn't pay.

There are 3 people who are forced to pay $42 me being one of them. The other person paid and said she will consider it his retirement gift and not give him a Christmas gift this year. That puts me in a bad situation bc I will be the only one complaining or arguing with him. I feel that he is testing how much he can get away with and the next time he will just bully us into something else.

    1. I can confront him and tell him how I feel. This may lead to an arguement or him disrespecting me and bullying me to paying.

    2. I can pay and just move on.... This will eat me up inside because he was the one who broke it in the first place and we are not supposed to even have it in our work area. We are all breaking company policy by having it and being by me paying for it, it makes me a violator.

    3. I can go over his head and tell his boss what he is doing... BUT I may lose my job if they side with him.

History: he has been bullying me around for 18 years. I started with an entry-level position (my first real job). I went back to school, and earned my degree. We have equivalent degrees but he is the manager. However, in his absence I become the manager as well.

Reply: I think you have to be a little political in this matter in my opinion. You are not doing so bad, I mean you are second in command. It all comes down to this.... Is 42 bucks worth starting a mess? If it is a financial hardship, I might bring it up in way to get out of paying. Otherwise just pay it;(especially since everyone else did and you would stand out as a trouble maker. Also pick your battles wisely.) There will be many more opportunities in the future for your boss dig himself in a hole, with out jeopardizing yourself. My suggestion is to sit back focus on what you are doing and when he gets caught it is that much sweeter

Reply: Let it go- whatever the higher ups want to do is none of your concern- Just follow the rules- Drinking bottled water at your desk is an essential- otherewise - say nothing- and eat somewhere else- your are working for a company and you must follow the rules - or else you are out the door -
