Managing Up: 59 Ways to Build a Career-Advancing Relationship with Your Boss

The Verbally Abusive Relationship: How to Recognize it and How to Respond

Your Rights at the Work Place: The Things Your Boss Won't Tell You

Reviewer/Reader Feedback: "The book, "Your Rights at the Workplace - The Things Your Boss Won't Tell You", shows how to identify on-the-job discrimination or harassment and offers legal suggestions for dealing with it. Author and practicing civil rights attorney Leo James Terrell examines workplace situations that include on African American engineer whose complaints of verbal harassment by coworkers and supervisors are ignored by management; and a highly qualified registered nurse who's passed over for a promotion in favor of a colleague involved with the boss. Through case studies like these, Terrell illustrates the "snares, traps and pitfalls your employers can use to oppress and otherwise shatter your life at work."

Unfortuantly your boss can do whatever he or she wants to. It is simply too time consuming and costly to fight them. They are well aware of this. They know you need your job, so therefore you won't put up too much of a fight. I have seen more terrible bosses than good one's. I wonder.......who hires these people? Who ever is above them....are they bigger idiots? Well remember this, what comes around, goes around. TRUE TRUE!!! I had the pleasure of watching a business I use to work for get shut down!! He did many of many people wrong. Did what he wanted to because he was the "owner". Remember owners...... your employees make you or break you!!!!!!! You may not believe it, but I don't have enough room on here to explain it to you. I have had my share of arguments with business owners on this subject. Everytime, I leave them dumbfounded. How did they ever become a business owner?? HAHAHAHAAAAAAA

I'm a boss and I have many bosses. Life is too short to be dealing with crappy people. You need to think.."Is this my dream job?" If so, fight but fight smart. Keep a journal of everything good and bad, go to HR/government offices/ see a lawyer w/ 1st free consultation. Beware it will be a battle and you may be pushed out. So if it is not your dream job-QUIT! Supervisors can make you miserable.

I work to the best of my ability my boss doesn't talk to me. I had someone to talk to at lunches they were of the opposite sex. Then she started to make horriable comments all the staff was laughing @ me. Since then I have ignored both parties. I feel alone and upset I have no reason to be treated like this. I don't believe in fraternisation in the workplace and never have and never will. Why is my boss making me feel left out. I am young pretty girl but I am not stupid and have high morals. I wish I would be given more work @ times. This sux

What rights do employee's have with regards to 'personal space' in the office environment? Is it our bosses perogative to look through our draws at will, remove items from our desk, disorganise my order of work etc.. My boss feels he can do all this as it is all company property and says that it is all part of working as a 'team'. I look upon it as being organised and knowing where everything is, he says that nothing is 'mine' and that I have no rights. I am not trying to hide anything but feel that I have a right to work the way I prefer. Whilst he rifles through my drawers! What are my rights please?

I have been pretty sick lately. The other day, my boss walked into the office to see me throwing up in the trashcan. He told me to go to the doctor and get better. Doctor tells me not to go back to work for at least two days, possibly more when the blood test comes back. Now, I've never left work or had a to take a day off for being sick. I have seen how he talks about employees who call in sick and he never believes them. Well now it is my turn. Doctor called me next day to tell me I needed to stay out of work for at least a total of five days because I was contagious and all that jazz. Well now I freaking out because I know the instant I tell my boss this I am gonna be in the doghouse. I call and tell him and he starts to have that tone that it is such a huge inconvenience for him. So I cave and say forget about it, I'll just come in. Then I find out he thinks I wasn't sick at all and never even went to the doctor when I haven't even been in to give the note. He's also been calling other stores in our company telling people his opinion, do I have any kind of options here?

I can feel with you all. My boss randomly changes my pay. But I can only figure that out from my own records b/c he doesnt give us pay stubs. He also has a favortie, his sons girlfriend, who gets away with anything. She doesn't do half the stuff that the rest of us do, and yet she gets paid more than me. The place that I work is one big place with 4 shops, a flower shop, a coffee shop, a sports apparel shop, and a gift shop. On a regular basis (after 5)there are about 2 people working. During the day there is about 3. not real easy when we get yelled at for not "watching" customers. I'm tired of it all. But I have to realize that im not the only one with boss problems.

Can your boss write you up when your sick and he tells you to take a break for a few minutes. At the time I didn't know what was wrong with me until I passed out at work and went to the doctor I was on a verge of a stroke and I was diagnosed with diabetes the next day he gave me a decision making day. When they found out the doctor was putting me on medical leave for a month.

I've worked at my company for 11 years. I have never been written up for anything. I've for for the same attorney for this long and in the past two years he's been wanting me to take on responsibilities which do not pertain to me. I do not have a problem with that except he just volunteers me to keep himself in the good graces of his boss. He never gives me credit for the things that I've done and he won't defend me when he need to. He's afraid of his boss and always says he does not want to step on her toes. Due to all of this I was out on disability for severe migraine headaches, stress and anxiety. He knew of the migraines and my doctor suggested i take a month off work to recuperate. My boss kept calling me at home and I felt obligated to start a week earlier than what I was supposed to. The week I came back the headaches started up again, the stress and the anxiety. I worked one week and am unable to go back because it literally makes me sick. My boss has been talking about me behind my back and I feel very discouraged about going back to work. I feel betrayed. 11 years of loyalty to him and the company and now I would like to tell him that even though my doctor has given me the thumbs up to go back I mentally do not feel ready and do not want to go back. Should I send him a certified letter in writing? Will I be able to get severance? Please help.

I have a boss who is a complete ahole. He always throws people under the bus and he has put me through hell for the past 2 years and now he finally got me. He had me do all his work and made sure i was not able to complete any of my own. When i told him how behind I was he went in to the system, called vendors and made sure to email all the proper management in order to get me out of the company. I would never work with anyone so manipulative and self centered. No one in the company can stand him. Just knowing that karma has a funny way of sticking its head at you, i am satisfied knowing that his day]will soon come. \ \\

I was injured on the job in April 2007. Once I returned to work, I was given more responsibilities, but was denied more pay. When I opted for another position in the company, I was denied twice. Around the first part of March 2008, I started having nightmares about hurting my ployer AND getting away with it. I recently quit because the day started like the nightmare had so many times. I am currently seeking a "Constructive Discharge" suit against my most recent employer.

After a successful 2007, I have just signed a performance improvement plan due to underperformance in sales. My boss is constantly trying to get rid of me. I work in a small business part time (9am - 1pm)and someone else comes on shift as soon as i leave, only 2 people work there and my boss comes and goes as he pleases. I've seen a staff wanted sign in the window if i'm still in town that day..so he's obviously sneakily put it up when i'm not there. So when I've been in i have people asking for an application form TO MY FACE...THE ONES THAT ARE REPLACING ME!!! I'm only 18 and I've never been in the "selling" type job, but i never got any training and when i got stuck i had no-one there to help me, I phoned him a couple of times when i really was desperate and then the next day he asked me why i couldn't do it?! Also calls me dippy/not all there and it hurts because he's making a fool of me, and i'm not the most confident person so i can't stand up to him. But I think i've done really well at my job and i need it now because i'm getting married in two months. He's been interveiwing people to replace me which is crazy because he doesn't have a REASON to fire me. What rights do I have?

I live in a small town. Was working at a pizza place for one year when a co-worker told my boss that I was selling drugs at work, which is untrue. I told her not to be telling people in town this rumor and she is continuing to do so. I applied for a job prior to this incident in town, having the pizza place on my resume the potential boss phoned pizza place for a reference, and was told that not only me, but my boyfriend and I are drug dealers. My old boss didn't get in touch with the police about this, she is only slandering my name in town for some twisted reason.I know not to use her as a reference, but how do I get her to stop talking about this?Should I be talking to a lawyer?

Is it legal when an employee calls in and they are genuinely sick, the employer tells them that they HAVE to come in and if they don't feel well later they can be sent home? if you're sick enough to call in for work, and you work with FOOD, don't you think they'd be appreciative that you don't want to spread germs?

I work as a full time day car teacher. My boss is cutting everyones hours but the people who she favors. There are students who are violent and curse and disrespect teachers and parents as well. when everyone speaks to my boss about it she laughs about the situation and walks away. kids are gettin hurt and so our the workers. one of the workers also gave one of the students something she shouldnt have and when we told the boss she told the teacher that she had her back. when we speak to hr about situations the only thing they do is tell my boss about what we say and it doesnt help.. I need help!!! i dont want to quit and i shouldnt have to

Can a boss use something from 18 months ago to write you up today as - you've been spoken to about this previously? Thus, because of that does the write up for an opinion of another new employee.

i recieved 2 minor complaints from customers and only got wrote up for one and i also had to call off the other day but it was my first time calling off and now i was only given a 4 hr day to work on thanksgiving and am not scheduled for the rest of the week. my boss is retaliating because i had to call off that day by only giving me four hours for the whole week is this discrimination?

For the anonymous Teacher, contact your union about the discrimination. They will investigate. They could even higher a P.I.

everyone google "at will employment". it's the reason most companies can do pretty much anything and you cant do a thing to them. AACPl is a fine example.
