    Worst Boss Ever.

I work for a very small family run corporation. My job is clerical in nature. The President/Owner is 65 years old, has numerous health problems, and seems to be having memory problems as well. Our industry is related to trucking/recovery. It is a rough and tumble business, with lots of cussing going on and you have to be a stern person to deal with the stress level of the job, the customers, and unfortunately in my case, the employers.

My President/Owner is a very unlikeable man, he has always been, but over the past couple of years, his behavior and actions have escalated to an abusive level. He constantly demands that we drop anything we are doing whether it is crucial to functioning business or not, and do whatever he barks at us to do. He cannot keep track of his own thoughts, his wallet, phone numbers and the like. When something isnt done to his liking, he always has some criticism. He is a know it all and enjoys telling people how to do their job, whether it be one of his employees or an employee of another industry and company. He cannot communicate effectively. He is one of those people that think you should be able to read his mind and know what he needs and wants. When things dont go exactly his way, he responds by calling the females in the office B***hes and C**ts, A**holes, stupid, idiot, lazy, dumb broad, dumb a**, white trash, n****r, are some of his favorites. He complains to business associates about his staff. He conatantly complains and drags personal issues into the business. He screams at the top of his lungs sometimes. The family members in the business endure this behavior because they get paid an obscene amount of money to work there. I earn a lot less money and they only work me part time. I have endured this abuse for 4 years, i have been looking for other jobs, and i havent been able to find one yet. I want to report my boss, but unfortunately there are no laws in my state that protects employees from verbal abuse. If i quit my job without another job lined up, i will be homeless and sent into a spiral of debt that i will never recover from. The alternative to staying sounds a lot scarier than staying and trying to endure the language and ridicule. I am the only person at my company with any college experience, and i feel like such a dummy for staying here this long. I wonder if there is anything i can do, if i can quit and file for unemployment on the abuse basis, because ive done some research and it doesnt look like i can. I feel helpless and stupid for staying in an abusive workplace, but i have no alternative as of yet.

Reply: Boy, I feel sorry for you. Sounds like you're trying to get out of it, but you're stuck for now in a bad situation. How about calling your local unemployment office or a non-local one in your area or state and tell them your story and whether or not you'd have a leg to stand on for an unemployment claim if you quit? Or have someone call on your behalf explaining your scenario? Keep it as anonymous as possible, in case you actually have to make a claim later. What about calling up an attorney who specializes in unemployment law and seeing if you could get some legal advice on this issue? Maybe paying for an hour of legal advice might be worth it to you. Best wishes. Let us know what happens.

Reply: After you read my comment, you won't feel that bad for yourself. I think my boss is the worst one on this earth. I work for this small company about 8 years, when I started, I thought I found the right job, my boss was very nice at that time, but around 7 years ago, when my father was in the hospital with cancer, actually he was dying, I called back to the office and told my boss that I had to stay until my father pass away, when I talked to my co-worker couple days later, my co-worker told me that my boss was asking her that when my father is going to die that I can go back to work, my co-worker completely shock and told him who knows, only God knows. After that, I start hating him, this comment is just 1 out of 10,000 incident.

Reply: Rally up the women and black people in your office to file a class action lawsuit. That'll keep the wacko on his toes long enough to make sure work is a lot easier on everyone. He's probably legitimately going crazy. Does he have any children you can speak to about it? Sometimes being on the street is better than being called an asshole every day. You decide.

Reply: (fyi - hate crimes are definitely illegal, verbal abuse included - calling someone a "nigger" or "dumb broad" in the workplace in a derogatory way can certainly wind you up in a pickle)

Reply: I do agree, i believe he is going legitmately crazy. Oh and to yourerights comment: His son works for the company and his daughter doesnt care enough to worry about it. So I guess my best option is to call unemployment and see if i can quit and recieve benefits. Or if worse comes to worse I will seek legal advice. I cant let this job be detremental to my health anymore! Also lookin for a new job still! wish me luck!
