My Boss Acts as if I don't exist.

I work for someone who is too young to be a boss. He's 28 and has only ever worked in this one particular environment. He's incredibly moody and will sometimes go weeks without speaking a word to any of us.

Two weeks ago, I was working on a software upgrade to one of our servers. The project included myself and one other person. My boss was fully aware of the issues we were facing, he had information that could have helped us and he held out on us until the last minute.

At this point, I find that I generally don't speak directly to him. I deal with him through email. I don't really care so much about having any kind of friendliness, I just want to have a good enough relationship with him to ensure that I can stay in this position for as long as I want to.

He does respond to my emails. It's just our face to face communication is weird. I guess my basic question here is, am I safe or should I start looking for another job.

Reply: Unfortunately, there's absolutely no way of knowing whether your boss is planning to fire you. An inability to communicate professionally does not necessarily mean that the inadequate communicator is thinking about firing people...in fact it probably doesn't mean that at all. It sounds like your boss is very immature AND he knows it. Refusing to communicate face-to-face and withholding important information are both very common power tactics employed by the immature. Only you can decide whether you should be looking for another job. If you decide to start a job search, it should be because you don't like working for someone like this, NOT because you think you're about to be fired.
