We do not have time to train you

So, I took a job, a jump in pay with an opportunity to use my writing background. It took a week to get the computer and software and accesses lined up, but in the meantime, I got pummeled with work and each had an email that said, "please format". They kept coming, as did funding requests, and as I tried to figure out how to organize all of this so I could do the job, I asked for training. "No training for you" is what I am told. We don't train, we expect you to do the job when you start. No notes, no one there has done the job before, it's all magic. I am shocked by how incompetent my two leaders are. They are serious, too. I took action with their boss, who helped me set up an plan to force them into communicating and it covers my butt. I'm on week 5 and I think I know what I am supposed to do, but not exactly the best way. I do know that I am not staying and have networked already with two other job prospects. Don't take it--you are better than that!

Reply: It's great that you found someone to help you, but watch to see if they begin to communicate with you a little better in the near future. I went thru the same thing when I started a new job 8 yrs ago. My drunken boss wanted to spend time yelling on the phone with her friends, rather than train me. Well, she got busy and then got into trouble and left me holding the bag. When she complained that she was too busy to do her job, she was questioned by her supervisors as to why she hadn't trained me so that I could help her. To CHA, she told them I was untrainable. I also found out that I was being blamed for all of her mistakes. So, watch your back! Try to be a part of as many activites, meetings, etc as you can so you can build a support network and learn things that way. Don't go it on your own and don't let the abuse go on for too long. It will only hurt your reputation in the company. When I finally got an opportunity to be of some value, my boss actually accused me of being liked more than she was and that I had usurped her standing in the company?!?!? I never got another chance again and had to transfer to another department in the company.
