    Ditator Boss

    Hello All,

I work for a company that utilizes division Vice-Presidents. I am an upper management personnel in one of the divisions and the VP that I work under is nothing short of a dictator. There are over 100 employees at the office I work out of and most of which arrive at the office at the same time. There is one women's room (2 stalls) and one men's room (1 urinal, 1 stall). The entire office including the bathrooms are always filthy, no cleaning agency is ever hired or solicited. The technicians keep the office filthy and on Fridays (payday). The VP says, "No one can have their check until the office is clean and if anyone gets their check I'm writing my staff up." Is this even legal? We have Administrators, Billing Specials, Instructors and the like all cleaning up afer slovenly individuals who render no help but want their paychecks. Please is someone has an answer or can steer me in the right direction, I would appreciate it so very much.

    Thanks All

Reply: Why won't they hire a cleaning agency? This is ridiculous. An office that big with no cleaning staff? That is dumb as hell. Without that, there will always be slobs who sh*t (figuretively speaking) on the clean, tidy people in the office. Happens everywhere. Has anyone suggested hiring cleaning staff?

Reply: Forgot to say, why dontcha call some local cleaning agencies and get some prices? Or suggest the office hires two part time cleaners (so one is always guaranteed to show.)

Reply: I have a friend who owns a cleaning business and they offered to clean the entire office daily including the front and rear parking lot. They were going to do all of this for $75. per day as a favor to me. They were told they wanted too much money. I think our VP doesn't want any additional expenses because they cut into his bonus (my personal opinion) although I know he's always complaining about low revenue percentages even though we're open 7 days a week and even in light of the present economy, we're still hiring.

Reply: It doesn't sound like they could legally hold your pay for refusing to do janitorial work that doesn't fall within you assigned duties. It's one thing to request assistance/participation, but using someone's pay to force them to comply sounds like a really communistic type of manager. Usually there's some form of insecurity or complex behind the actions of these dictators. At times you might find that they're usually really small men looking to overcompensate for their small stature.

Reply: This is so very true and what I've noticed in everyone working here is that it just so happened that he (the VP) went on vacation the last week of Dec thru the first week of Jan (actually coming back on the 5th) and the atmosphere was so very relaxed. Noone quit, noone threatened anyone with violence or anything like that, it was actually quite a pleasant working environment for all. But today he came back and the tension that he brings with him is back from vacation as well. Any suggestions would be a huge help. Thanks, N

Reply: Ask your state health department what are the requirements for businesses and office spaces such as your's for cleanliness and maintenance of cleanliness. Request (anonymously) an impromptu inspection of the place. Tell them it's a health hazardous workplace. Whaddya think?

Reply: Thanks for the advise boss_sucks_dung. Just to update all on this thread. Monday 1/5/09, one of my fellow supervisors who comes to work at 12pm and isn't allowed to leave until our technicians are routed for the next day (usually 3-5am the next morning). He got off of work at 4 am on Monday and fell asleep behind the wheel of his car and ran into a pole. He was on life support until this Saturday past 1/10/09 (he passed away Saturday as well). It was brought to my attention that the VP stated, "Well, the good news is that at least he wasn't driving a company vehicle". The sad part is that the owner of the company isn't insensitive like this. I sent an email to Congressman Ruppersburger last week detailing what's going on here. After I sent it to him, I received a copy of a global email he sent out (which I kept by the way) letting all office staff know once again that if the office isn't clean, no checks are going to be issued. I also found out that they have hired the PM's cousin who is a substance abuser to come in on Sundays to clean up. The problem is that this shop is open 7 days a week, so they need a daily professional cleaning service but they're too cheap to pay for it. Thanks again all.
