    Immediate help! Going crazy

I feel at the end of my workplace rope. My boss has been the most unprofessional, condescending person ever. She talks about getting drunk all the time and sometimes comes in in the middle of the afternoon saying she was hungover. She refused to train anyone at the office but screamed at us and made us feel stupid when we didn't know how to do something. We had to teach ourselves almost everything. To make matters worse she has no problem calling people morons and saying explicitly sexual information about herself and others. She is extremely narcissistic (Talking about how amazing and nice she is to help people out all the time) and I believe, a compulsive liar (said by others). Now the worst part...

A few months ago she told me I was being laid off. Our workplace had a terrible deficit and unfortunately I couldn't stay; I was horrified but I was also feeling depressed about my worklife anyway so I saw it as a great opportunity. Unfortunately no one is hiring in my field and I am getting worried. She told me not to tell anyone at the office that I was being laid off as they didn't want me to know this (but said she was nice enough to give me a heads up). She also said she was able to get me to stay until I finished my contract; something that apparently my office didn't feel they could do. She told me they would be emailing me about my lay off soon. It has been months and there hasn't been an email from them. I don't think I'm being laid off at all. I just think she doesn't want me to sign my contract because I'm one of the few that does kiss her butt. Plus, she asked me to let her know about jobs I was applying to so that she could be prepared should they call. However, I told her about an interview I had (That went amazingly well) and she happened to know the person. Well needless to say another person in my office was finishing up her contract now and my boss go her a job at the place I was interested in working in, and I fear it might actually be the position I wanted. I worry that I might have been sabotaged. To make matters worse my co-workers who do kiss her butt sit around whispering in their offices and look suspicious when I walk by (Especially when they are with my boss). I'm so miserable and I just want to finish out my contract as I need the money terribly, but I don't think I can take much more of this. It has been about four months of this plus a year of putting up with harassment and condescension. Any words of advice?

Reply: Try to remain positive about things. Play the game and when she asks you about where you are applying simply tell her that you have not been able to do so. If you are any good of an employee you will find another job very easily. You can read anything that the hr professionals will tell you, but I can tell you that threatening good employees in the bad times is just like in the good times - the better people will always find a better place to be no matter what the economy will hold.
