Newbie and Need Help

First off I am new to the work force. I in 4 months move to asst. manager. Problem is the 1st asst. and manager gossip. There are only 6 employees so close group and in this is my problem. They have outside activities they talk about that are not legal. And if I have a issue that I feel is important to tell the manager about the other asst., like left the keys to safe out all night ,or left the store when there was no one but part-timers left alone. She goes straigt to that asst. and says so and so told me you --- and then creates negative surrounding. Now the only reason at this point I say anything is cause I am covering myself. Trying to make sure that I dont get in trouble 1)for not letting higher ups know that serious rules were broken and 2) so that I am not accused of it myself. I am the outsider. There are several things that go on I just dont know what to do. I dont want to create problems but when something bad happens I dont want it placed in my lap. So theres no where for me to go. There are district people but they come in one day a month for maybe 4 hours. I love, love my job but I feel that they are nice to my face and then gossip behind me. When the manager ask what was done last night and I tell and show what i did and then she ask what the 1st asst did I dont say anything ,she keeps after me to tell her why and what was going on that she did not get her task done,then she says to me " you have to tell me I have to know" then i get drilled , was she on the phone,was she outside with visitors and of course i feel like i have to respond and when i do ,she jumps all over the other asst. saying i said that she did nothing but talk on the phone and sit outside with her boyfriend. Now what is that. They gossip about each other and I am sure about me. But what is a manager doing putting me in this position to be the bad squeeler. All I want to do is go to work make money for the company and go home. I love the place i work, love what i do , love the customers and i feel i am good at it. How do you handle this. I have thought about going to DM but these people have been there for a long time and i have been there a short amount of time and just promoted to asst. Please someone help. If your a empoyee in the same position or in management and can tell me what you think i would love to here. this is making me crazy.
