Forced to resign due to applying elsewhere

Can your employer force you to put in a two weeks notice, just for applying for a new job in a totally different field from where you work now? Still have to qualify, interview etc, but thought it was worth applying for since it IS in an area you have worked before and a position came open. Not even within the same industry you are in now? If not could there be any legal action taken.
