Reach Your Career Goals By Managing Your Boss

"Are you having trouble getting your manager to buy into your ideas? You can't put your finger on the problem. All you know is you're not getting credit for what you do right and you're being overlooked for plum assignments. I have worked for many bad bosses during my career. Being in sales, it was usually that they hadn't been in the field in so long that they had lost touch with what was really going on out there. I found that the best way for me to reach my career goals was to take the bull by the horns and invest in a business development coach who is used to being out in the field. My coach, who works out of Chicago but has clients all over the country, has helped me by doing the things I expected from my manager (helping me cold call, close deals, etc.) and has offered me advice to deal with my manager. Now I manage my manager by giving her the information she is looking for (new appointments and closes) and by letting her give me the advice she thinks will work, and then going back to my coach to devise a strategy that works. My boss thinks I am successful because of her, which keeps her off of my back. I don't really care how much credit she takes as long as the commission checks clear and keep getting higher. I know who deserves the real credit, my business development coach.
