Why do managers reward lousy employees??

Work in the medical field. Consistently I see managers rewarding the worst employees in the workplace - you know who - barely competent, slackers, call out sick consistently etc. Just yesterday, my boss nominated the worst tech in my facility with a hospital-wide award. In effect, THIS person became the rep for the rest of us!! Is the boss using this person as a tool to punish the rest of us because we all complain? The loser she nominated is like a dumb puppy who's been written up and chastised - and who has not a critical-thinking bone in her body. That tech constantly must ask for direction and spends half her time zoning out and surfing the net. I'm just curious...why do bosses reward the idiots and tee off the competent workers? Awfully soon, several will retire without replacements and I'm thinking this dumb move will inspire earlier departures.

Reply: Well generally there is 2 reasons why bosses and managers do things like this 1.Is there is a click within the workforce and the manager is rewarding someone within the click or 2. the manager knows that the person he is promoting is easily manipulated and controlled. With a weak person in a position of authority stronger managers can control the workforce via the weaker person. He has in other words built a human firewall. He controls what he wishes and if it goes bad he has a fall guy to take the blame. A common tactic within management is to keep the workforce fighting amongst themselves.this tactic keeps the energy of the workforce not directed at them. It is easier to implement policy that is unpopular without opposition of the workforce because the workforce is spending its time and energy against each other. My advice to lab girl is this. Examine the relationship between the boss and the employee in question. then you must be a force that unites your department.when a group of employees act as one and stay united. Bosses and managers tend to start doing the right thing. It won't be easy and you all will probably will get some blow back and even retaliation for your actions. But always follow company policy but you and your co-workers have to work as a group.A divided workforce is easy to manipulate a united workforce tends to make management do the right thing.
