    Unfair Compensation

Need help making a decision to stay or leave. I was hired as an asst. marketing/sales rep. also client serv. coord. Director was fired. The Dept. has been left in my hands. No raise or change in title but I was expected to and have been handling all of the responsibilities of the director as well as the job I was hired for. I have tremendously decreased expenses and increased sales and revenue. The Co. is now making money and there is no plan to increase my salary. The boss is a very negative, disagreeable, micromanaging personality all of the time. Not approachable. If there is any possitivity in the air he always manages to suck it out. I enjoy the job most of the time. Salary, although it is not commensurate with responsibilities, is the most I have ever made. I have also begun to collect a sales bonus that the boss offered several months ago, but I have to fight for it, it does not come willingly. He also does not trust my sales figures. Has another manager comb over them for accuracy before bonus is issued. I have never given him reason to mistrust me but the 2 directors before me may have been not trustworthy. I don't appreciate being treated this way just because the 2 directors before me were bad news and were both fired. I feel like I will never gain full trust. The boss is psychotic and is in therapy several times a week. My dilema is more do I put up with it or move on. I can't change him. It is hard to stay motivated in this environment. I have never been in such a negative environment before. I have been loyal hoping that loyalty would be reciprocated. I don't see it happening.

Reply: Since the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, it looks like your boss will not treat you properly any time soon. In view of your accomplishments, you have a strong track record that should really help you to get another and better position. It seems to be time to move, but take your time and find the right one. Also consider factors such as: what your boss might say in a reference check; other people at the company and elsewhere that can act as references for you; and what you will say when asked about why you are leaving the company. Also your existing boss may well give you a counter offer when you resign so be ready to deal with that scenario....which you should basically reject.

Reply: I basically agree with Andrew about the future. However, I was also interested in two things you said - first, about the fact that the job pays the most you have ever received. The boss probably knows this if you put it on your resume or application. Therefore, he might feel justified in treating you as he has been. Secondly, I was interested in what you said about another employee checking over your sales records. Chances are, he will stop this crap if he realizes time and time again that he is wasting time if everything is in order. The choice to stay or leave is yours - only you know your own situation.
