    Criticized In Front of Customers

I am employed in a business as a receptionist. I answer phones, schedule employee appointments and greet and help customers as they come in to the business. Several other employees have been also scheduling appointments. There are occasionally mixups and people not scheduling enough time, getting contact information, etc. My manager criticized me with both barrels blasting recently in front of customers and other employees. I was told it didn't matter who made the errors I was at fault and was accused of being cruel, uncaring and doing it on purpose. New time allotments that I was never told about were mentioned as if I should have known about them. I am sensitive to begin with, but being blasted and accused unfairly in front of others left me feeling totaly humiliated and hurt. I began to cry. I left briefly to pull myself together, but couldn't seem to stop. So I told another employee I was leaving because I could not wait on customers in trhat condition. How should I deal with this situation? Any thoughts?

Reply: I have a boss who has absolutely no finesse. If he wants to "move staff meeting along" he rudely interrupts you mid-sentence, saying "Let me stop you there. We aren't going to talk about this now." He does so in such a patronizing manner, that today, I sat there with tears running down my face. Glad to know I am not alone.

Reply: Tell your employer: "I would be doing you a great diservice if I did not tell you that your "behavior" is not only unprofessional, but also offensive." And if they continue add: "Stop that right now." And if they won't shut up - walk off. What, you going to fire me? Make my day! I am not that lucky! Trust me I have said that to a very cruel and threatening boss and I took a 1hr break as I was that angry. Yes, I have been so poor with a child and I refused to take any kind of abuse at work (and sexual) finally. I quit and I walked out letting them hang. I know your tears, I know the fear. Odd how many jobs there are out there (along with more loser companies that need to learn how to run their businesses). I run my own company now and I would NEVER treat my employees with such disrespect and I encourage ideas. I also encourage growth in them. I value humans.

Reply: I wanted to add a Receptionist IS THE KEY ELEMENT in any business (only an idiot employer would not know that? Are they out to sabotage their own business?) A receptionist can make or break your business. YOU ARE HIGHLY VALUABLE! To error is human and it is your employer's job to take you PRIVATELY aside and suggest what they need from you and to LISTEN to you. Feedback is important from you. Along with your suggestions and solutions. Bosses are not gods. Also no it is not humanly possible to do ten different things at the same time and answer phones at the same time and give those people time either = mistakes. In order for you to do your job you need ------ are they committed to that (your solutions)? If not, you need to move on to a company that has a brain attached.
