My boss insulted me in front of employees, so I quit..

I've had to put up with her unprofessionalism for quite some time now, and although we were very friendly towards one another, she has a horrible temper, and when things don't go her way, she yells and starts slinging things, etc. I'm the type of person that I question things sometimes (not disobey, just question) and recently she asked me to do something and I questioned it because it had been done twice already, and a small argument ensued from there. It ended up with her insulting me (with curse words and all) in front of at least 4 employees and behind our front desk (I work at a hotel) where any guest could have walked up. What's worse is she said things to purposely hurt me that my mother has jokingly said to her in the past and she was also loudly yelling/screaming said things. Two days later I found a write-up that she had made out saying I had committed insubordination, started a fight, was reading a non-work related book, and something else. I found that incredibly unfair, so I called her and I left. I didn't want to leave my job, but I didn't want to deal with her anymore. She has had these "freakouts" on me at least twice before, although her niece (which she hired) has been the only witness to those two. So I have two questions - what would you all do in this case - would you report her foul abuse or rather, is there anything I can do about her insulting me? And 2, can I file for unemployment benefits? I had another girl tell me if I could prove willful miscontent, that I could (and I have a copy of the writeup that she never even told me about where she even admitted in it that she insulted me and so on). What do you all think?

Reply: I would just like to add that she is always complaining about the stress of the job, how she hates it, etc, as well, and that she is not mentally competent enough to handle it - and has even said so herself. It was a stupid thing for me to quit, but I just got tired of all the crap. She is a nice lady when she wants to be, but she has a horrible mean streak when she is "stressed out" and such.

Reply: Eshe - I would document what happened and see about getting the record corrected. I would also see 2-3 employment lawyers for a free 30-minute consult to understand you options and to do everything you can to have the record revised and to get an appropriate reference. Gary

Reply: Eshe - good for you for quitting. i had been working in a similar situation with bad bosses....abusive actually. i have had my boss insult me, lie to me, shut the door in my face, verbally abuse me, hang up the phone on me and then, on friday - they had the nerve to fire me. i wish i had done what you did and simply quit. NOBODY deserves to be treated that way! i wish i had just quit!! i was offered a severance package but i intend to negotiate to get a better deal - after all that abuse, i owe it to myself. whatever you do - make sure you take care of yourself!! good luck!

Reply: I guess you could call this a learning situation and try to be proactive. I am in the same situation, have not resigned yet but am on the verge. I beleive you should request an exit interview, document her behavior and move on. She is a user and abuser! At least this information would be in her employment file. The hotel business is big on employee rights and I think you can go around her authority. You owe it to your self and your self ignity to formally write a report. Good Luck!!!!!!
