    humiliated in front of peers

I had worked as a store manager for a regional midwest wireless phone company and took over a store in May 2005. In October, my boss who had a devoted following of direct reports and was a true leader, was replaced by a bully with a "used car salesman" mentality. He put a bulls-eye on my back from the start, even though I had turned around my store's performance to levels it hadn't seen in several years. Last January during a meeting with my fellow managers, he outlined in a handout the changes he planned on making in the coming months. All the items were read aloud to the gathering. Under the page for my location was "Replace Store Manager." Needless to say, I was humiliated and embarrassed beyond words and so were my peers. Sensing my response, during a break he approached me and said "I'm really sorry, that was not meant to be in there. At the worst, I may just transfer you to manage another store." Well I bought it. Four months later and one PIP later with unreasonable goals, I was fired.

Moral of the story: I should have contacted his superior to complain but didn't, thinking "no way my job's in jeopardy.
