    Knowing More Than Your Boss

    I need advice. How do I handle a boss who wants to learn what I know so he can replace me? Everytime I achieve something, he wants to learn how I did it. Instead of being happy or supportive in any task that I accomplished, he immediately asks how did you.....????? How did you get that information? How did you fix it? How did you find that out? What was the problem....??? AHHHHHHHHH!!!!

    He was placed in his position without merit. He just happens to be the same race as the CEO.

    Please help...It's driving me crazy. I don't want to teach him so that he blows me out. It's a real stupid situation.

    Any advice please...?

    Reply: First, how do you know your boss is trying to replace you? Has he said so? Over the last 20 years, I have often asked the people I lead how they do certain things and while I have had many different reasons for asking this question, I've never once asked it because I wanted to replace the person to whom I'm addressing the question. Second, you should know that in today's work culture, withholding information from anyone you work with (including your boss) is considered to be extremely bad form. If your boss does end up replacing you, it will probably be because you refused to provide him with the information he asked for (and this would be perfectly legal, it's called "insubordination"), and not because he's obtained all of your work procedures from you. I strongly recommend you ask your boss why he wants to know all this stuff, and tell him you're asking because you need to know what format he'd like the information. (Who knows, maybe HIS boss has asked him to write a procedure manual for your department, and your boss is just asking for your help!) And then start providing him with the requested information, every time he asks for it. Please be assured that I didn't write the foregoing to critize you, rather I'm hoping it will help you realize more open, honest and productive communications and work relationship with your boss.

    Reply: Well, it is a tricky situation lack you are in. First off, I would trust your intuition as to what you feel is going on around you. However, at the same time, if you could cooperate and let the pieces fall where they may. I know that is not an easy thing to do, but try just the same. Also maybe just putting feelers out in the job market to see what is going on will make you feel more assured about the situation. Good Luck and have Faith!

    Reply: I understand what you are going through. It is difficult to open up communication with your boss if your thought process is that you might be replaced if you tell him how you did it. I would like to take it in a good way. Open communication with your boss might make it easier for your boss to work with you and see you as a valuable employee. By showing him your innovations and creative ideas, and being open with him might be a way for him to notice that you have the abilities and skills to be promoted to a higher position. Good luck!
