Sticky situation

I am required by monday to write a list of things to do to prevent a situation from occuring again. The situation is that a temporary worker left abrubtly (quit) b/c she said I treated her inhumanly. This is not true. I am her contact person in the office and had to explain to her that she could not take 2 hour lunches w/o letting me know beforehand b/c the work schedule did not permit for it. Also there were cleanliness/sterilization issues that had to be addressed due to patient safety.(Medical Office) She blew up at me for that one. In both situations and others over the period of 2 weeks I approached her w/ "kid gloves" yet got attitude back. I never responded negatively back to her. My office manager was aware of the tension occuring but gave the t.w the option to deal with it or not. I feel the office mgr is partly responsible for the end result yet if I imply this I will make a bad situation worse. Another employee had a similar run in w/ her and that was also dismissed as being the fault of the current employee not any to the t.w. I have been here for many years and feel that wether I accept being a scapegoat or I stand up for myself I am probably going to be fired. Please if anyone has a comment or suggestion I am wide open. Thanks

In PR we say that perception is more powerful than truth (awful, but often true). Really consider the problem from the other POV. Admit that it is possible that in your fervor to do your job while training support staff, you may sometimes sound abrupt, which they may take as rude or personal, and you will try to add a positive statement every time you have to offer a correction. If the OM is partly responsible, go to her and say you know with her experience she has encountered people who sometimes take advantage with long lunches or goofing on the job and you are struggling to know just how to handle it without creating a tense atnosphere, hat maybe SHE could advise you. That MAYBE she would be willing to address a problem with this person you you coulkd see thr RIGHT way to do it (bet she won't get 'tude!). I mean no offense but often we are unaware of how we come across. Ask your best friends to be dead honest with you and to give you suggestions for how to temper your style to be constructive while getting results. Ask the OM the same thing, acknowledge that she has taught you a lot but you are really having trouble with this and would appreciate her giving you some guidance so you are not coming on too strong. Be humble. You MASY have a problem of being very direct and no nonsense that puts many people off when you are just trying to be professional. Tell the boss this. Ask her what you asked here: How do I manage the Temps to keep them positive and motivated without pressing them so hard they feel offense. |
