Bad Management or Bad Company?

I recently started a new job (7 months agao0 and at the time of hire my General Manager told me that after 90 days my performance would be evaluated and a raise would be based on those findings. At 90 days he said let's do your evaluation after 120 days and I agreed. Finally, yesterday he tells me he is going to go to the President of the company for me and ask for a raise. He comes back and tells me that the President denied anything over $1,000 raise a year because "he said all I ever do is run around and never seem to accomplish anything". My boss should be the one to evaluate me right? I was not given anything in writing or was there a written plan of action on how to improve my performance and I was advised by my manager to "be careful what you say to the HR Manager". What in the world am I supposed to do?

There are several things "I" would do.
1. Set up a meeting with your boss, "somewhere other then in his/her office." It's known as a neutral area." Ask him what he believes his boss meant by "all you do is run around."
At the meeting give him a memo stating what you understood what he meant/intended by telling you 90 days, then 120 days, etc.
3. DO NOT be hostile...be professional...you are just looking for information,...talk in positive ways, i.e., "I appreciate all the things and support you have shown me," but in reality you are making them think.
4. Make this a learning experience. In the future when you have a meeting or discussion with anyone, especially a boss, send them a memo after the meeting to recap the discussion, i.e., "I am just sending you this memo to ensure I got all your information and requests correctly." Really what you are saying is, "This is what you said, etc., etc."
5. Best of luck...remember there are a lot more jobs out there.

Vince's advice is excellent, but legally they cannot deny you access to HR OR to your Affirmative Action officer. Simply step around them and DO IT! If Vince's advice does not yeild positive results what have you got to lose; you won't get a good reference there. I lost my job but I did everything right and I still take great pleasure when I think of the look of indignation of the AA Officer's face when she heard what he had done to me, how he had claimed it was his right as chair, and how he was bullying me and abusing me. SHE called HIM in for a "come to Jesus" meeting and read him the riot act. No, I was not able to save my job but that schmuck learned a thing or two and felt the fury of a powerful woman in administration reading HIM the riot act. I'm sure he squirmed like crazy. Nah, I didn't keep my job but the union and the AA officer all made sure he knew he was a screw up. They just couldn't protect me in the long run, but I LOVE remembering that. I also love remembering a meeting with our Dean and the Union President to address the issues and this bully tried the old "stare her down and intimidate her" trick. There were fully 30 seconds of silence (a long time in a meeting) during which he glared with malice and I did not blink, turn away, make any gestures or noises. I simply leaned across the table, keeping his eyes and gave him the "hit me with your best shot, bucko" look. The Union Rep finally had to break the silence. I had NEVER in my life had that courage before. When I told the Affrmative Action officer about it shge saiud it sounded like he was bullying me and I should not only have stared back but been aggressive and asked why he felt the need to try to stare me down and behave in an uncivil, nonverbal fashion, and I should have told him that mind games do NOT intimidate me. I had felt it was a victory to not break eye contact, but she was right...we do NOT have to take this crap anymore. |

by the way, the advice about HR...may be true...they work for the company, not you. Watch your back. |

Tell your other friends here to go to that site, too. He is ridiculing us for not being true professionals about our "business transaction" and basically calling everyone here a big baby. I think he's due for a smackdown. He's entitled to his views but he represent corporations, and sucking up to them is his livelihood. No compassion for what people here have gone through. |
