    answering machine firing

How about a law firm that fires by answering machine? Tew Cardenas in Miami fired me after I spoke out for 2+ years about their billing practices (illegal and unethical) and because I would NOT lie to the senior partner's wife when she asked me about his on-going affair with an accountant with whom he was billing clients for time! Big cover-up. Who wants to pay for his/her lawyer's time spent with paramour?

Reply: Well... I hope you kept the recording, along with any other documentation. Reminds me of a movie, The Survivors, where Robin Williams was fired by a talking parrot. Good luck on your new direction and above all, stick to your ethics.

Reply: sounds ugly. very sorry to hear. another note, were you happy there? Perhaps a good outcome in the long-run? Would you consider contacting a lawyer? Perhaps, Florida has a public policy protecting against being fired for opposing unethical billing if it was directly related to their decision. A lawyer would help you get a settlement, if the challenge and drama of litigation is something you can stand, until a payment comes forth. Contingency fee might be accepted by some lawyers. Good luck and God be with you.

Reply: How about this: A note shoved in an envelope under my office door, so when I came to work that day, followed into my office by a student, I got to read of my non-remewal of contract in front of a student and keep my expression free of shock...and then teach for another month and a half, take my students on a competition out of state for which his secretary made all the arrangements, as is policy, and learn when we got to the competition, every reservation was screwed up and we almost had nowhere to stay. The point was to punish and humiliate me as much as possible because he had no real grounds for non-renewal, but was free to do so under contract rules during the first two years without cause. On the exi interview all he would admit was that he wanted someone with credentials in a slightly different area, and had to concede, in front of the union president, because I had documentation, that I was the highest rated professor in the department. But he got his way, even though he, as usual, didn't understand the academic culture and didn't follow the rules, this costing the university a tidy sum. Yeah, he was fired within a year after, but too late to undo the damage to MY career. I think these peple show their true colors when they act so despicably, even when they have all the power and could choose to terminate employment in a civilised fashion. Voice mail, email, notes slipped under doors...those are the actions of a bully hell-bent on inflicting as much injury as possible.

Reply: jrosskamp: emarie again. Would you go to the Employee loyalty link, read the comments, and please comment on the attitude of that guy...people here are NOT talking about "warm fuzzie" being needed. It's just like Aretha says: R E S P E C T Tell your other friends here to go to that site, too. He is ridiculing us for not being true professionals about our "business transaction" and basically calling everyone here a big baby. I think he's due for a smackdown. He's entitled to his views but he represent corporations, and sucking up to them is his livelihood. No compassion for what people here have gone through.
