What can I do about a coworkers who bring their sick children to the office? I have tried talking to our supervisor, but the supervisor says that if they have no babysitter and are needed at in the office they can bring the kids in.They wont let them work from home when the children are sick, they bring them in and I get sick along with everyone else.I like kids but HATE being sick....last winter and spring I had one cold after another. Other look for another job, which i am considering, what can I do?

Reply: The workplace is no place for sick kids. Maybe if it's a teacher's day off and the kids are not a disruption it is humane to be flexible, but neither colleagues nor kids should come to work sick. If you don't have kids of your own, you are a sitting duck for all their new viruses and it's no wonder you get sick. Those of us with little kids in school eventually build up a few immunities, but this ultimately is costing the employer if YOU get sick and miss days (even if you don't miss you are not feling up to par). Try to tell this all to your boss, that you reallyunderstand what a terrible spot these parents are in when a child gets sick and how parents can't afford to miss work and the kids DO need care and supervision. Suggest again that they be allowed to telecommute on those days, or discuss the parents arranging a sick day co-op where they interview a sitter who can come to their homes when their children are sick. Explain about how your immunitiees are low because yu are not around kids and you wuld not want to miss work. PLUS, point out the liability factor if one of the kids got hurt at work. It is SO HARD for parents, and bosses should take the lead in being flexible on this matter to create a family-oriented workplace.
