"We've all heard horror stories of the boss from hell, or had first-hand experience with a difficult boss. These stories usually don't have happy endings. However, there are some things you can do to improve your working relationship. Learn what they are in this guide."
Sometimes, living well is the best revenge. My boss took every opportunity to belittle, to excoriate, and to harrass me, personally and professionally. It turned out he had a pattern of abusing male subordinates, and had a track record of forcing any man underneath him to leave. I tried the usual routes: reasoned face-to-face discussions, attempted to enlist his managers, and suggested mutual means of rapproachment--without success. If anything, what I tried to improve the situation made him even more malevolent. He ransacked my desk, tampered with my files, attempted to tamper with my computer files (good thing the network wouldn't let him), and instructed the office not to send me a get-well card during/after major surgery until it was clear I would survive. When I got another job in a different office slightly above his rank, he went ballistic, but leaving took away his control. That may be the last resort for dealing with a bullying manager--leave. The pity is that he'll only move on to another target.
