    Can he ask me that?

    During my yearly review, my boss asked me if I was job hunting, since I had been a few months ago, but decided to stick to what I was doing for the company. He reminded me that my job would require time to find a replacement, and that I would need to give them more than the standard two weeks!

    Before this review, my boss walked into my office, locked us both in there, and questioned me about what my plans were since the "rumor mill" had me leaving. Can he do that? Can he constantly check up on me every month to see if I am going to leave the company?

    Reply: I am not aware of any reason to prohibit the boss from asking you if you are leaving. When bosses find out a person is job hunting, they get worried. It seems to me that you need to have a discussion with him so that he is not worried about you leaving and so that you can work there as long as you want and progress there as well. Then this questioning should stop.

    Reply: Your boss damn well better not be 'checking up' on you, unless he is 'checking up' on rumors of everyone else. I would suggest making a log of everything that has happened, including dates, times, conversations (and with whom), and others present. No boss should single out an employee for special (good or bad) treatment. Bosses must treat employees fairly and equitably. However, in your situation, I would step up the job search. And, you could actually leave on the spot if you wanted to. There is no law holding you to "two weeks' notice".

    Reply: Sounds like the boss is more worried about how your leaving would effect him rather than WHY you would be looking. Good luck on your job hunting...maybe you will find somebody who values you.
