I am 50 years old, I have a co-worker with the same job title as me who is only 27. Obviously I have several more years of expereince in the industry (harmaceuticals) and I and also have a nursing background. My salary is about 15K higher than hers, she knows this because my boss does not keep anything confidential! Any way, she is constantly telling people that I am only paid more than her because of my age, I am tired of hearing it from others and she has even said it to my face. Is this a form of harassment?

Reply: i don't think so, however, i could be wrong. i think that the focus here is whether or not your rights as a worker are being infringed upon because of your age-are you being treated with less respect/is there a disparity in treatment, job duties, or salary/benefits due to your age? it doesn't appear to be discrimination, simply an implication that you are unjustly being paid a higher salary, and possible a distorted perception of a coworker. if you know that your experience and training make you worth the salary you're being paid, it may be worth saving your energy to fight bigger battles. i would continue to do a knockout job, and ignore her comments. so, she thinks she's worth your salary. that will happen quite often. it depends upon the nature of the situation and the impact of the comments-if it has had an emotional impact on you, voice your concerns to your boss. if they do nothing, then you have a problem. otherwise, her being jealous will not make you earn any less, or her any more.

Reply: You bet this is discrimination. Companies are not supposed to discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, national origin, gender, AGE, religion, etc....... This little ignorant woman is actually jealous of you. The best thing you can do is do your job as well as you have always done it, and let the brat stew. The next time she says nonsense to your face, confront her with your knowledge of her own jealousy. I would say something like, "Well, if you are smart like I am, and you get an education, and you work hard like I have, you will one day be where I am! And I will be happily and successfully retired.

Reply: It's not harassment if a co-worker comments on your age..it is if they create a hostile work environment, however..why are you worried about what a snot nosed kid has to say anyway? Show our maturity and don't worry about it.
