The very woman who makes everyone's life hell in the office gets nominated for an award from our supervisor despite the fact people have quit because of her. She verbally attacked me on day after I said Hello, chasing me down the hall has I tried to take off my coat yelling. She makes my day a living hell. I constantly have to do things she refuses to do even though they are in her job description. Despite repeated complaints the supervisor gives her an award!!! talk about your slap in the face. I can do no right no matter what I do and this person can do no wrong no matter how she terrorizes the workplace. I can't believe it. I want to quit but I need the paycheck. I am stuck in the worse situation I have ever encountered. I would never have thought I could be victimized like this and have to take it.

Reply: GET OUT NOW! Seriously, I understand the need for a paycheck but you need to find another job. Start surfing the job boards, get your resume in order, network with friends who work in other companies...get the ball rolling. I worked for a woman exactly like this for almost 3 years. She was my supervisor and her boss consistently ignored our complaints. In a department of 10 people, 14 came and went in those 3 years. The big boss wrote it off that those 14 were "problem employees." It will continue to get worse. While you are looking for work, start saving as much money as you can...that way you have some lined up in case you are forced to resign or are fired - trust me, it can happen. Good luck to you!

Reply: Only you can decide if your employment there is worth it. Keep a log - include dates, events, people with whom you interacted and people in the room, who could be potential witnesses. If you are a man, you may be the victim of gender discrimination. Also, if you are a woman and you believe (and can prove) that the behavior is directed toward you because of your gender, you may be a victim of the same. In either case, you should notify your supervisor, and/or the Human Resources group, Ombudsman, or similar office in your company. If using the company's chain of command does not work, you can contact the Commission of Human Rights in your state, or the EEOC (which has offices in all major cities). Also, try to ascertain who may be allies that might act as witnesses on your behalf. You might be surprised at the number of people who have had to deal with the same crap and are sick of such behavior. If a number of people confront your supervisor or Human Resources, it will be far more compelling than if you just go alone.

Reply: Oh, yes, my "Boss From Hell" has also received the "Employee of the Year" award from our Corporate Office. They have never experienced her in her 'true' state, when she is carrying on like a madwoman or screaming at her employees like the true maniac she is. These 'awards' just are not fair sometimes.

Reply: My boss has borderline personality disorder. One day I am the the greatest gift to creation and the following day, I am fearful of losing my job. I have gotten in a pattern where I call my email as I walk from the parking lot to the front door to work to see what mood she is in for the day. I am a single mom working on a MA degree and am slightly dependent on keeping this job in the interim before I graduate. My boss gives me big raises every year and pays me well, but I have finally realized that after almost 8 years she will NOT change and no one else is going to stop her! The good pay just doesn't make up for the roller coaster ride anymore! Does anyone else have a boss with BPD? I would love to hear someone else's experience.

Reply: I knew of someone like this many years ago, we had workers going to psychiatrists and the like. She had undiagnosed BPD as best I could tell. My co-workers were praying the rosary before work, we had a job where we were out in the field every day, imagine that, this lady was out in public too. She also received the employee of the year award. She had soo may fooled, but oh boy, if she had it in for someone, watch out. She was verbally and emotionally abusive. We counted at least 9 employees who had to leave because of her, and then she finally left.

Reply: Correction to my previous e-mail, the bad boss had undiagnosed borderline personality disorder, not bipolar disorder, sorry about that.
