avoiding bad references from abusive boss

I have been in this job for 3 years and the abuse from my boss has been getting worse, despite all the staff going to her boss to complain a year ago. I have been job searching for 6 months but am fearful that a potential employer will insist on a reference from my present boss. I can only imagine the false, spiteful and damaging things that she could say to ruin my chances of getting out of here. Does anyone have any advice on how to handle the request by a potential employer for my boss' contact info?

Reply: Go through the interview. If it this comes up, explain the situation as candidly and discreetly (and with as much class) as possible. Most people will put two and two together and realise you're leaving your current job for a reason, so they won't ask. If you ARE asked: Don't take this opportunity to trash your boss. I've interviewed a few people (and sat in on a more than that) and this situation never came up. We've had one or two candidates out and out SLAM they company they were coming from during an interview (what better way to show how bitter you can become?). As such, they weren't hired. 2. Let your previous Performance reviews speak in "his/her" stead. At our company everyone gets a copy of their review (and one is kept on file in HR). What will say more about you: Your performance review given when your boss has no clue you're considering leaving, or an angry "recommendation" once your boss realizes you're two weeks away from leaving?

Reply: Hello Merc2k It is such a relief to know that others have this type of problem and that there is a way to handle it and survive it! Thank you so very much for taking the time to pass along this advice. I will try it.
