    Young Looks - An Obstacle

My age is 30 and I have 8 yrs of experience in IT. I have worked for 3 companies of varying sizes ranging from 80 employees to 8000 employees. My problem is I look too young foy my age and experience. In one of my first meeting with the client, I was asked to take notes. Because I dont look down upon any work, I started to do it. But after the introductions, the facilitator felt I was too senior for that and wanted me to do most of the talking and instead took notes herself. These kind of incidents are frequent when I meet new people. I used to be proud of my young looks till sometime back. But now I feel these looks are stoping my growth as popular opinion about me is that I am too young for higher responsibilites. I am very sure that this opinion is not based on the value I bring to the table but solely based on my young looks. Can anyone suggest how to handle this.

Reply: Hi! Well..just a few thoughts. First, when you get to be an old lady with flabby underarms like me, then you can complain! Until then, it sounds to me like you have knowledge, youth, vitality, and perspective. The only thing I can think may be missing...is ownership! Have you considered opening your own business, and working as a contractor for other businesses? This will immediately take care of the age issue. Companies hire contractors for their knowledge...not their age. If you are concerned about health care, insurance, paid vacations, etc, then you're not really worried about working...are you? Give yourself a chance..and start your own company. In a few years, people who now don't think you can...will be paying you to come back...Won't that be a shot of adrenaline? Oh, yes...and when your company asks for your consulting...just enjoy getting paid twice what are now as their employee. Come on, gorgeous Lady...show 'em what you're made of!!!!
