Don't let it happen to you....

As I write this it has been a week since I quit my job because the boss was disrecting me in front of others but not in front of employees. I want to let you all know as employees if your boss is disrespecting you, then go to his/her boss. I did go to his boss but she didn't believe what he did. If no one believes it then go to Human Resource. I was told by one employee there to document all the things that he has done. I was working there from SEPT 03 to June 15, 04 when I said enough is enough. I told his boss that I quit and the next day I went to Human Resource and told them what he has done. They told me that they will check on it. I know from other employees that it has happened before but like I said no one believe's it. A previous employer left as well because she had problems with him. Nine student employers left for the same reason and because he didn't like none of the student employeers. A present employee will also leave. These are the things that he has done. He has snapped his fingers at me several times. Has told me to stop wearing the perfume I wear because his ex-girlfriend wears it and he had problems with her. (He is a married man.) Told me I need to think like him. (Can't because he is male and I am female. He was born in the '50-60. I was born in the '80.) Told me he wouldn't sign my timesheet anymore as long as I kept on wearing that perfume. (I wore this perfume on the day of the interview.) There are more things that he is done but I think those are the more serious ones.

Hi, Nina...It's me again. Hmmm..well...looks like you took care of that problem! Or..did you? Remember, Young One...there are many things each of us needs to do to make Life worth living. You are young, and intelligent, and eager...but where is the stamina? I will NEVER defend a bad boss...and this one seems to have had his problem points...but there are some things worth learning from him, too. 1. Did you know that perfume should never be worn in a workplace? Not because the Dingbat's girlfriend used to wear it...but because many are allergic to perfume. That's simply being kind to those around you. 2. Of course he wanted you to be like him...if you were the boss, would you hire an assistant to be going in the different direction from you all the time? A boss needs some strength from those in his charge...just as we need to feel the boss' approval. 3. As far as the timesheet goes, I sure hope he didn't really refuse to sign that. All you have to do is turn in your report to the IRS. Tell them that he wouldn't pay you, and then call the EOE Bureau. They tend to disagree with attitudes like that from bosses! The only other question I have is...does the orientation material state that perfume is not to be worn on the job? Go looking, Nina...'cause that will be the cincher right there. Take care...and good luck. |

Hey Jenny. I clicked submit without realizing what I had typed.
The perfume is similar to what the ex-girlfriend wore. The perfume I wear is a very expensive brand that came out 2 years ago. That perfume that his ex wore has been around longer than that maybe 10+.
No employee at work had a problem with the perfume or had an allergic reaction to it. It was him who had a problem with it. I have been complimented by clients and those employees that they like the perfume I wear because its not too strong.
The time sheet, he did refuse to sign it and told me to tell one of the other employee's to sign it. |

Why the big deal about the perfume? Is the perfume more important than your job? I stopped wearing perfume at my last job because my co-worker seated next to me did not care for it. A harmonius workplace is more important to me than perfume. You might have a little growing up to do, and more people are allergic to perfume than you think. |

Nina,
I am proud of you. We are young and we have to fight for our respect. If your boss doesn't respect you-it coinscides with your work. This will trickle down to everything you do. Though I just quit my job and my family doesnt understand why I dont care. SOCIETY tells you to stay where you are not wanted but the inside spirit guides you always.....Keep your head up..... |

Thanks for the replies.
About the perfume Mindy, he was the one who didn't want me to wear it not because he was allergic to it. It had a SIMILAR smell to the one his ex-girlfriend wore and he had problems with her. That was the reason he didn't want me to wear it. I felt that it was not a good reason for me to stop wearing it.
He even accussed me one day of wearing it when I wasn't and refused to sign my timesheet that day.
I had always worn the perfume even on the day of the interview. He never said nothing till the beginning of this year. |

He is your boss, and again, I stopped wearing pefume because the lady at the next desk did not care for it, I did not ask her why, even though she was not my boss, it is more important to me to get along with people at work than to wear perfume, and I was also born in 1980, and the lady who asked me to stop wearing that perfume was probably born in the 50's. You should have stopped wearing that particular perfume the first time your BOSS asked you. |

about the perfume - sometimes i have come across others that i work with that I dont like thier perfume - but out of respect, I don't say anything. Nowadays it is common for people to not wear (many companies have policies against it as stated above). I agree with others - but also, you need to earn respect - as well as give it. And - when your boss asks you to do something - DO IT. Unless (OF COURSE) it is against the law. Think of it this way - when you become boss - do you want to be the one in charge - or should the employees be in charge? |
