    Working for a family business

How do you deal with a boss who micromanages every department of the business? We were hired to do the jobs we specialize in but when we try to make change all we face are resistance. The company was founded over eighty years ago and if you were to work in the office you would think that you were in a time warp. The only reason we have a computer system is that we were forced to by the companies we deal with and our customers.

Because this boss micromanages every aspect of the business the company is tetering on the brink of oblivion. Customers will not do business with us because the owner has created an air of uncertainty as to whether he will be in business in the near future. The boss will not tell us what is going on but your gut tells you there is an underlying agenda going on. This is an unhealthy environment. What should we do?

Reply: I am french. My english is not the best but I am sure you will understand my response. Leave this company. Try to find a job in an other one. In this situation you can not feel confortable in your daily job.

Reply: That's right. You have to be strong in your mind the time that you find an other job. As I say In : english : The powerfull of your mind is the power which characterizes your success. In French : la puissance de l'esprit est le pouvoir qui caractèrise ton succès. What is your job ?

Reply: Pete, I don't know if you are still monitoring this. I am in a very similar situation. I am the manager, my boss founded the business over 30 years ago. He is semi-retired and micromanages from a distance. It finally dawned on me, after fighting for capital expenditures for the last two years... He is just trying to get as much out of the business as he can, without putting anything into it. He talks a great game about increasing market share, blah blah, but all his stupid speeches on our weekly meetings are ringing hollower and hollower with me, the staff, the bookkeeper... Get out. Oh, and just be comfortable with the fact that after you leave, all the businesses problems will be your fault. Family businesses have a seductive power to them. They seem, at first, like places where you could settle down and work till retirement at. That is, until the psychological damage starts.

Reply: You are right about getting as much out of the business without putting anything in. I am faced with the same circumstances. The is no investment in the company for it's existence in the future. Just what can I get out of it so I take the money and run while the rest of us are just spinning our wheels trying to make our departments productive. I am getting out!!
