    Why Do Many Say HR Not Helpful With Bad Bosses?

    Further to our site survey question (How helpful is your HR department in protecting employees from bad bosses?), 77% of respondents believe that Human Resources staff are not helpful and only 1% believes that they are very helpful. Comments, questions and insights into these result are being requested (e.g., what could HR departments do to be more helpful, what is preventing HR staff from being more helpful, and do employees have unrealistic expectations of the role of HR and bad bosses?)

    Reply: In all the companies I've worked for HR is there to walk people through the paper work on their first and last days of employment. That's the only positive I've ever seen regarding HR. Other than that they are just a money pit for corporate finances.

    Reply: I have never seen an H.R. help anyone in anything. The H.R.'s I have worked with where the most insubordinate person the company had. In 25 years of working 3 different jobs, all three H.R.S had one thing in common, the attitude-I am the H.R. and I am untouchable. There probably is at least one out of 1000 that can do there job, but I do believe companies are better of without them.

    Reply: Mgmt is a bridge between workers and HR. If a manager is bad, the last thing HR will do is take action in the open. They'd much rather handle the issue very quitley... It is an embaressing situation to HR. On the other side, HR works for the same company you and I work for.. You must remember that these people want there job to....

    Reply: HR is where good ideas go to die. It is a repository for people who are useless, bureaucratic, have no imagination, and are programmed to say "no." HR exists to maintain the status quo. Its function should be to process paperwork only, following instructions issued by qualified professionals who make the decisions.

    Reply: I have survived 3 bad bosses. One was a director of HR, so approaching HR would not be helpful in anyway. She was not that abusive, but very inept. One was trying to shove me out so he could give my job to his married girlfriend. There the HR didn't care and higher-ups were more geared to their promotions than dealing with possible problems in the workforce. He was actually the longtime friend of one of the VPs so really untouchable. The actually had a bet going with a partner to see how fast they could drive out their new hires! I was told I held out the longest anyone had in years. The HR knew of the issue, "warned" me by telling me he was demanding (that normally isn't a problem with me - and he wasn't "demanding", just annoying), and just wanted to keep her job so kept supplying the raw meat. Anyway...from what I have learned, it is best to cut one's losses and get out of the job as soon as possible or incur serious stress realted health issues (which I now have because of all this). Not a wonderful option, but after trying everything, it was the only one.

    Reply: I would have to agree with Peon's response. In my experience, HR has been there on the first day, last day and at annual reviews to make sure everything that is said is documented. I've never seen this documentation actually do any good or go anywhere but in your file, in a drawer, but it doesn't keep me from trying.

    Reply: My experience is that HR is part of the management team, therefore, the "TEAM" mentality comes into play. Further, my experience shows that conversations that should be confidential - even if they have nothing to do with the boss - tend to leak back.

    Reply: One thing you need to remember about HR. They are not there to protect your interests....they are there to protect the company's interests only...that is who signs their paychecks, the company, not you. So in my mind they are useless as neck fat!!!
