hateful and incorrect e-mails from the office manager

    Hello,

I am a retired teacher who for four- and -a- half months have been working part-time in the office of a family physician. I did not apply for the job but was approached by the Dr.'s wife who is also the office manager! She is like a hummingbird that never lights very long anywhere and talks sooo fast that I never know what she has said. She is in and out of the office and super unorganized. There is such a mess of papers all over the place but everything is done on a very confusing computer system. She asked me to work as a fill in when someone was off. She told me that she would pay $9 an hour and $10 with short notice. Then called and said her consultant said t6o start me at $8, then $8.25 in 2 months, and $10 at the end of the year--no benefits. I had to ask for the .25 raise YEAH!In the beginning,I worked 3 days a week, then 2 or 1 1/2 and now someone is going on maternity so i was given a contract saying I would work 4 afternoons a week until she returns to work. To get to the point, I am at the front desk to check in patients which is put into computer ( fill in all demographics), take co-pays, answer phone, log phone notes, send medication requests to nurses, give out samples, take payments for them and post.Call all patients to remind about appointment for next day. make appointments for call ins, give forms to fill in, scan all info, count all money at send of day and make reports. All of this for nurse prac and dr. Yes, I make mistakes. The woman sends e-mails such as, " Why didn't you post that $5.00??????" or What does this message mean my dear?!!!!! and blessed me out (e-mail)because a pt. came in a day after being in the day before to have a procedure because the Dr. did not do something.. Patient stated that she did not have to pay her co-pay again per you-know-who. Others in the office confirmed it because I had not been there the day before. She saw Dr. You-know-who sent mail to me stating that I am not to take the word of a patient. She had changed her to an appointment for the second day so she had to pay and she had left the pt.a message. She said it much more hateful! Next day ,she told me to call the lady, ask if she got the appointment message, and to mail the $25.00. The lady did not get the message and asked how could she be told one day of no charge and overnight it changed. Said she did not want to deal with you-know-who!! I sent her a-mail stating what the pt. said and she did not reply.

Another incorrect mail--A man came in at 4:00 on a Fri. requesting medication, saying what he had did not work. He did not know name of med. I told him to have a seat and I would mail request to nurse/try to catch her between patients. 20 mins later I told him that the nurse would not get to it until after the office closed, asked for pharmacy name and his phone #. Sent to nurse. You- know- who sent me mail, " Never take it upon yourself to tell a pt. to go home without talking to a nurse!!!!!!!" I replyed with an explanation. She sent back, "oh, sometimes I send e-mails without thinking." HURT FEELINGS????--ME

Sure, sometimes I make a mistake or forget to do something but not on purpose and she always says, "Why?"

There is a nurse pract., a Dr., 3 nurses,4-5 office personel,1 lab nurse, and at least 25-30 patients are seen a day!!

I hate going to work because I feel like I have to walk on eggshells!!!! They can't keep employees. Since I have been there a nurse prac. and secretary have quit. I plan to do the same when mother returns from having baby but need the pay so must find something else. How can I deal with the boss for the next 9 weeks????? Help!

Reply: Simple. If you don't like it quit gracefully and move on to what you will like. Before you do that ask yourself two questions: 1) Is there anything I can do to improve what needs improving and; 2) is there anything I am doing that contributes to the situation. Be honest on both.

Reply: Few more things. She sounds manic! I had a manic boss too. She drove me crazy. I was impacted by her personality and I'm sensitive so it bothered me to have a crazy person around. I would have to say, just recognizing that personalities sometimes don't click and match is one thing. I also know about people leaving the place. At this last job, the woman we worked for was so crazy, she was impacting everyone. In one year, that I was there, a secretary of 8 years left (basically, I think she was tired of being overworked), then her replacement left in a few months, then another temp left, then another was let go, then I left....then right after me another person quit. as i'm writing this, i realize this WAS an insane workplace. Why else would so many people leave??? It can't just be that we were all crazy, right?
