Have just looked at the findings about "jerk" managers. My own experience of "jerk manager" behaviour fits exactly. Am a manager (male)myself but NOT a jerk! That is to say, I WAS a manager until I recently quit my job because of not one but 3 absolute "jerks" -all female - two above me and one below me (hired by the two above me). The one below me even had the audacity to TELL me she was a "jerk" (only she used the word "bitch")within 5 minutes of talking to her on her first day on the job...! I was (& still am) recovering from experiencing 3 "jerks" at once. The need to understand what happened to me & if others have experienced anything similar (to what finally caused me to resign) is what lead me to eventually find this web site and subsequently this topic...

I have been in a similar situation although with men. After 2 years of putting up with it and keeping my mouth shut, I also left my job. The one thing I hear far to often is take it or leave. At this point my attitude (yes it is an attitude) is until employer's are screaming for employee's or it becomes a big embarrassment for the employer, this problem will be ignored.

Jerk bosses typically won't change because they often refuse to admit that they are part of the problem. The boss usually has a pretty sizable ego that tells him he is the best for the job and knows more then anyone else. While a healthy self esteem and confindence is good, often times this bleeds over into the boss refusing to admit any failures or shortcomings. So, when there's a problem - it's your fault. The boss is the boss - he can't be wrong, but the worker can. In my experience it's best to just move on. You aren't going to change that boss so why try? You'd be better off finding a block wall to bang your head against.

I am having some experiences with jerk bosses. He tend to belittle /dehumanize some of his employees, put him/her down and tend to nit pick everything from what time he/she live the cube, question on where he/she went and why even if its a simple thing like going to the HR or going to get a glass of water etc. He tend to be constantly on the your back for every little things. Recently, he made some bizarre request like calling him on the cell and letting him know that he/she had arrived. Most people are here at work around 8:40am -9.00am and out at 5:40pm to 6:00pm. He is Continuously threatening some individual(s). These are just some of the few lists of out of the many things. Is there anything that can be done as an employee? What are risks involved? Thanks again in advance

I left my job because of a jerk boss, and guess what? The next job I went to has the exact same boss with the exact same personality, she prides herdelf on letting people know she is a hard nosed bitch. I am beginning to wonder if companies now employee these less then human people because they think they run the company well. I feel stuck, I was hired by this lady because of my ideas and the ability to turn a CS department into an excellent unit. But every idea I have is shot down by her. I have been there 2 months now and already feel trapped. I dread looking for another job and starting all over again.

My boss "works from home" two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, which means that those of us who work every day can count on being told (not asked) to work overtime on Mondays and Wednesdays so that she can finish off as many projects as possible and run her errands, get her hair done, watch TV, etc. She shoots a few e-mails at us periodically during the day to document her "working". As a micromanager, it must be difficult for her to trust us to do our jobs (sometimes difficult considering that she doles out information like it was gold) when she's not here, but I imagine she feels that it's worth the extra lesiure time.

I also worked for a micromanager he was stupid yet treated his workers and fellow managers like he was the only one who knew what he was doing, but in fact he was the most incompetent person I have ever worked for. Example he told me to hang up on customer to go to weekly department meet to listen to his stupid call analysis which always failed to inspire anyone this guy was a total idiot. Other manager in the company told me no one in the company had any respect for this guy, and they could not understand why the company CEO hired this stupid person. But unfortunately in that company it was who you not what you know that got you the job.

My boss sounds a lot like the horror stories here. She emotionally abuses the workers by constantly finding fault with EVERY little thing they do - nitpicks and complains as well as guilting them into believing that HER mistakes are their fault. She loves playing the martyr in having to put up with all these “mistakes” because God only knows, “why would she do such a thing?” As well, she loves throwing a child’s tantum and crying when things don’t go her way, when some good common sense and some bloody damn patience is what she really needs. She’s God’s little angel and yet the rest of her employees are set out to ruin her. She wants perfection from everyone else, but is the first person to make the most of the mistakes out of the office. We have to forgive her faults, but she blows our faults out of the water if we so much as make a small mistake like mistyping a word in a draft document whereas she adding the wrong sums of the money and over paid someone’s account.

Additional: She loves playing the blame game on everyone else and never once takes the blame for something wrong that is proven to be her fault. The biggest thing I hate and I dread is when she calls me into her office (bellows from her office btw) She loves telling me how much I’ve screwed up even though almost everything that goes wrong now is stuff she does. Example: Me: But you provided me that answer to use -here’s the sheet with your writing on it. Her reply, “I did not. I don’t know where you found this, but it’s wrong, do it over! I can’t believe how stupid you are. You don’t know anything about this. I shouldn’t have to do your job.”
