My boss is a wonderful guy and rather inexperienced in our particular field. His style is to manage by consensus, refusing to take the hard line, and I find this incredibly frustrating! Any suggestions?

Yeah, Thank your lucky stars! Managing by consensus and then deliberating, and then making a careful, informed decision is the RIGTHT way to manage. How would you like to have an authoritative boss, who never solicits input, never listens, and when things inevitably go wrong, instead of looking for the underlying reasons, he manages by berating, belittleling, and browbeating the employeee victim.? You seem extremely lucky. What's the problem?

at first glance, it seems ideal, you're right. but at some point, the boss needs to make a decision. and the painful fact is that he can't. THAT'S the frustrating part!

Boss won't make a decision? Combat indirectness with directness. Place the facts before him and give him time to digest and act. If he doesn't, then tell him your need for decision.

Well my boss was previously a home ec. teacher now a tech. director with no experience or know how who goes with a decision from who ever appears to know what they are talking about. She spends twice as much money on things just because of ignorance and no will to learn by just relying on everyone else for the answer. She constantly complains about how bad she feels and takes vacation as much as possible to avoid problems. She tells us that she knows that one of us is going to eventually take out job. It seems to everyone for the exception of the highest boss that she is a screw up and we can say nothing and just go along with the ridiculous decisions she makes. :(

I have a boss that sets me up for failures constantly ! However , she recently yelled at me and grabbed my face and yelled at again .. very over the top . I am the most unpolitical person and I am mad but I have no idea where to go now ... anonymous 2

I too have a boss who sets me up for failure. No matter what I say, I'm wrong. I confronted her by telling her that it's very difficult for me to come in to speak with her every day, when I know I'll only be criticized. I have never received any positive feedback of any kind from her. Her response: "Well, I can see how that would be difficult for you. However, I really don't have anything positive to say about you."
Gee... thanks for that wonderful feeback. It's so great to have a manager who understands. Being told you provide nothing positive to the group is so effective.
When I get to be manager, I want to be NOTHING like you!

I was fired for being a lesbian a few years ago and I stil worry about it all the time. You can contat any human rights organization or check your local gay friendly listings to see if there is an attorney to help you. I know how you feel, it's a hard thing to argue, but you have nothing to lose at this point. Good Luck!

I have a new boss. She comes in to work before me and is working when I leave. She is emotionally distant and communicates well, but when I ask her questions I get short answers that don't convey that much information. Sometimes she loads me down with work and other times she lets me work at my own pace. My difficulty with her is that she doesn't seem to be leading us anywhere--she's just delegating work for us to do. Today she called us in for a meeting and was somewhat rude, saying that we were "telling her how to do her job" even though we just wanted some clarification on how we were supposed to accomplish something. I can't tell where she is coming from--it's like she doesn't want to have anything to do with us on anything other than a "you do this, you do that" level. Any comments? Reply with mars: on the first line.
Thanks,
mars

My boss hired me as a manager and so far I have had no training or even met with him. He canceled our frist training session and when I called to see when the next time would be He said another supervisor would call me when they set up a date. The tone in his voice meant don't call me anymore. I am a sitting duck. Our program starts in three days. By the way the other supervisor quited. BD

My boss is a senior manager and a chronic liar. All of the department staff and many others in the organization know this. Yet the CEO and other senior management allow her to get away with this behavior. Her staff do all the work and she takes all the credit. She also has a pet employee who's hostile and passive-aggressive to everyone else. But he makes her look good, so he can do no wrong by her. The entire atmosphere is, in a word, cancerous.

My boss too gave out personal, inappropriate information about staff members. My boss would sit around and laugh and talk about the staff in a demeaning way then laugh and smile in their faces - that was hard for me. Also, when a staff member left whom my boss didn't like, and someone would call for an employment verification for that employee for another job, my boss wouldn't just say that the person worked there, how long, etc., things they may do within the law, but would go on to say what the person did, why they didn't like them, etc. Anyway I'm sure the person didn't get the job. Isn't this a form of blacklisting? The former employer is preventing the employee from obtaining a job by badmouthing. I thought that was illegal.

Gee, we must work with in the same company. Sounds just like my boss. If she wants to really get rid of a person, she will pull out all of the stops, and everyone knows it, but will not say anything to her boss. Why? Because she has them in her back pocket. One morning my boss and her "pets" came in they were all laughing, telling what they did over the weekend, etc. They were very, very loud. And it was hard to focus on your work. My co-worker got up and asked in a very nice way to please keep it down. Well, by the early afternoon, my co-worker was called in a meeting, written up, for her not meeting her goals. This lady is a very hard worker. All of this for asking them to please keep it down. This still goes on everyday, unless the boss is away. It's great then. She comes back to work tomorrow.

It is refreshing to see others venting frustrations about awful bosses. It helps. My boss has been "running" the section for a while with just myself after a reorganization. There were five of us and it is down to her and I. She blames me for all bad things that occur, but never takes any blame-even when I had nothing to do with a project!! Besides that, I have saved her behind several times. I had to leave to perform military duty and she badmouthed me and basically said that I do awful workand that I am disorganized. (People tease me about how organized my desk always is!!) Her desk is completely disorderly and she never finishes tasks, loses things, etc! Many in the organization do not like her, but when we finally got a new employee in our section, my boss thought that she should use her typical passive aggressive manner to tell me that I had to give my chair to the new person!!! Not cool. I had to leave for an hour to let my anger subside. I am very happy-go-lucky and have a solid work ethic and take pride in my work. I think my boss is jealous because I am a 20 something, and happy...and she is envious of my accomplishments...at least this is what several have brought to my attention and got me thinking that maybe it is true...any other younger women with older women bosses that have felt this or seen it? All I know is that my mother works with younger women and knows to treat them with the same respect as all others. What is it with these people? Any suggestions/comments? Thanks CB4

Oh boy - can somebody advise me on this one? My new boss (6 months) happens to be best friends with the Director who hired her (for 20 years!). We have noone inbetween the two to approach with a problem. This new boss does not like to be challenged or confronted and gives opposition to everything I bring to her! I asked for a meeting to discuss my concerns with her, trying to provide every opportunity for things to change before I quit. One thing I said was, Every time I bring something to you, I get opposition. Her reply - NO I DON'T. DUH. My next step is to take it to our Director (her best friend). Shaky ground I know. I love what I do and the clients love me. I really do not want to leave but cannot see myself working with this woman as our "Leader" much longer. Wish me luck. Any advise?

I am a line supervisor, and fortunately most of my staff are good people. But there's always the odd bad apple. My boss will not give me the authority to deal with slackers and problem employees and neither will he deal with them himself. He even gave one employee a payrise behind my back. She was a frequent absentee and did very little work, but he fell for her sob stories, which simply weren't true. Another employee used to come in late most of the time and refused to answer incoming phone calls because she didn't like it. My boss practically called me a bitch for wanting to crack down. My team knows my boss isn't a manager's backside, but I am embarrassed and feel stupid when I can't uphold my department's standards. I feel bad, too, that all my good employees have to pick up the slack left by the bad ones. They don't see why they should, and frankly neither do I! Any suggestions? (other than leaving!)

I'm part of a three member management team, we manage a resort in the caribbean, I'm 23 years old, the other two are 21 and 22. Because of the remote location of the resort we find it dificult not to enteract with our employees, where do we draw the line to avoid disrespect from them.

Don't know if it will work for you, but I go out of my way to be extremely fair, and by that I don't my treating my staff all the same. I treat my good employees like gold (flexible hours where it can be done, trust, regular reviews and the best deal I can get for them from the company. My bad staff (and there are always those)I crack down on pretty hard. I find the difficult, gossipy kind are almost always poor employees in other ways too. Begin keeping excellent records of attendance, productivity, accuracy, attitudes to customer service etc and record how each employee has contributed to your organisation in general. It's worth the time it takes to do it. Come review time you will know who deserves your backing and who really deserves to go, based on solid facts, rather than an emotional reaction to the unpleasant atmosphere you have now. Even if it's not your decision to hire and fire, you will be much better placed to make recommendations backed by facts. Your staff will learn to respect you. The good ones will love you for recognising that they do the right thing, and as for the bad ones, well, you will need a thicker hide. They will often try to belittle decent people to distract from their own behaviour, no matter how good a boss you are. Accept that they won't all like you and recruit allies among the better staff by acknowledging their contribution and rewarding where it's due.

Just started a job with a Pizza place and this is a newly opened store. I have only worked with the owner for 4 days and he has bad mouthed reps from the home office, calling them morons behind there backs (which I basically said harsh to). He also bad mouthed an employee to me. Now I just overheard him bad mouth me calling me moron to another employee. Im just wondering what I should do? It really has me mad! I mean this guy is a moron, I.E. He opens the store the day after the super bowl duh!!! He smokes! Has this 80s hair-do. Not only that but hes flirting with the 15/16 year olds that work there, real stupid. I want to ask if hell walk outside with me and punch him square in the face! He is sucha punk! Worst of all he is 10 years younger then me! He mumbles orders and then gets pissed when I have to ask what he said. I know I cannot assualt this guy because I dont want to go to jail, but this guy really dishonors me!
I mean I know there are a million pizza places out there, but since this is a start-up they are giving me a zillion hours, which I need since I am making almost nothing per hour, well at least nothing compared to the Production Design jobs I have been in.
What should I do? Thanks!

One of our four supervisors will be retiring in the spring and I am the only one in my county office who is qualified to replace her. However, I found out recently that my immediate supv. has been 'discussing' me with her manager. To make a long story short, it is now rumored that I am not the manager's choice and if another wkr. from another county office would only interview for the position (when that time comes) she will be offered the position. This is not the first time this has happened to me nor is it the first time that this kind of 'pre-selecting' has taken place in my agency. I and others have interviewed for various positions down through the years and somehow the desires of the hiring managers is known even before the actual interviewing takes place. What can be done to (at the very least) to ensure that the 'hirers' keep the knowledge of their 'personal' choices to themselves? If there has been some legal precedent set on a matter even remotely related to this one...let me know.

I am a manager and am having problems with my store manager. She's older and doesn't know a lot about how our bussiness is run. I think she feels threatened by me because I know more than her. She is constantly putting me down and insulting me, expecially in front of our other staff members. I'm currently doing 2 jobs for her, and she cuts me no slack. I do my job, but she still finds a way to put me down. Everyday she says something to demean me or make it look like I don't know what I'm doing. Others don't do their job and she doesn't say anything to them. In the past, my bosses have always praised me for my performance. I feel like it's personal. Other managers agree that she singles me out and looks for ways to be mean to me. Why is she treating me this way?

My Boss, is a great work place politition. He tells you what you want to hear and if his lips are moving he is lieing. It is the first week of April and he has not worked a full week this year. I took this Supervisor job over nine months ago and I have only had 3 meetings with him. I sat and talked with him on the last friday of march and that was the second time since Christmas. I send him emails to keep him up on what is going on my shift and he doesn't even open them. And I know for sure because I tag them with a reciect. We also have a female supervisor on first shift that has no clue what she is doing. She treats her employees like some kind of pond scum. She has pics amoung the shift and even treats them like crap. She has a woman crying every week. She lie's constantly and act's like she is in charge of all other shifts. I find great humor in that. She has been a supervisor for eight years and still can't figure how to even turn her computer on. She thinks she has everyone fooled but she is only making fool out of her self and the BOSS.

I have a boss who is not only a Micro-Manager, but also a Control Freak as well as Perfectionist. I was hired to handle things she doesn't know how to do, but constantly contradicts not only myself, but how the industry requires things to be done. She is constantly demanding that computer programs do what they were never designed to do and berates all the Tech Support people for not knowing the product. (To the point that industry tech support will not answer anymore) And at times stands behind me and tells me how to write code when she has never taken a computer course in her life, then gets upset when the code she created doesn't work. No amount of updates and job journals appease her - nor does any system not created by her suffice. I keep my daily task and job journal (updated every 15 minutes) on the computer so I can do rapid searching as she assigns close to 25 to 40 tasks a day, but berates me for not using her notebook system with coloured pens, which causes her to lose track of her tasks. And she can not abide by a timeline or project timeline. The one thing I've discovered about Micro-Managers is they cause Macro problems... and as they get bogged down in the details of their micro-managing, they unavoidably decide that what is needed is more Micro-Managing to get out the mess they created.

I have a boss if you go to her with a problem she becomes defensive and usually makes a decision that is wrong. She is focused on office get togethers which will all find phoney. She will get on you if your a few minutes late however you work through your lunch answer calls at home form work. She then takes either every Monday or Friday off. Somtimes saying she is working from home. Everyone knows she is not productive those days but is overlooked. My thought is you manage things but lead people she is the opposite. She also had her husband hired as a supervisor and he has been fired from three other managment positions in the past. Cant wait to retire.

I have 2 bad bosses one will not stand up to bad employees and he won't stand up for his other managers. My other manager is always calling and she always finds some reason to single me out. I'm not sure why she has singled me out and I'm really tired of it when I try to stand up for my self she will switch to something else to complain about I feel like I work the hardest out of all our management team and I always finish my work unlike others who leave early every day. My dad taught me when I was little hurry and get your work done so you can play. So I always hurry and get my work done at work and I never get told good job and I never get to go home early even though I have done my work and the other managers work as well. How can I get that woman off my back.

I work for one of those bad bosses that put a letter in my HR personnel file that was a big fat lie!!! Of course I have put a letter denying the accusations, but the fact remains that the boss is allowed to lie in black & white. The boss has verbally harrassed me in front of others many times, but nothing has been done regarding the boss's behavior. The boss is a known liar and I've been told not to trust this person that this person repeats things and makes up things. The boss discusses other employees in a negative fashion and to "stir the pot" in the department with their employees. This is not setting a good example. In fact I was told the letter put in my personnel file was strictly confidential. Well after I left work the day it was given to me she told my co-worker about it. My co-worker cannot believe the boss's behavior toward me. At least I have not been grabbed in my face, but since I wrote the rebuttal, the boss has actually treated me almost like a human being.

My boss has had several affairs while I've worked for him. He makes suggestive and often sexist comments to female staff members and drinks heavily at staff gatherings(and then acts inappropriately). He lies to everyone because he says that he "just wants everyone to get along".When you approach him he sticks his hand up in your face like a stop sign. He complains of having workers over 35 because they "don't do
anything" which basically means they don't fool around on their spouses or drink excessively or lie to get ahead. the morale is SO low at our office. So far the only staff members who are getting anywhere are those who have joined his old boys'network (women included) and go along with everythign he says to boost his ego? What to do? What to do?

You must work at my company!
Morale is very low among women (only) at our company. We don't get promoted, we don't get raises, however: the boss does badmouth us to other employees and lie about us to the president of the company. It's so crazy that one would think it can't be true!!! One boss tries to play us off each other. The president is just hoping we'll quit so he won't have to fire us and pay us unemployment and raise his insurance. Then they can abuse the next women who come here. Ladies, be very careful out there! There are some misogynistic pigs who would treat you in terrible ways, while simultaneously complaining of how their wives/sisters/mothers/daughters are treated at work.

my control freak boss never ever praises any good work done but oh boy if the slightest mistake then its a meeting, berating, etc. last week she called me and co-worker in for one error. she was phoney nice enough in explaining the problem, but right after, she sent email to us and two other supervisors saying how this caused considerable embarassment to the company (it didnt at all)and went on and on to make us look like idiots. as tho this is going to help us be better employees. by humiliating. looking for another job.

i work for a fairly new company that is family owned and operated. my sister-inlaw is the pres and her general manager has worked with her for 30 yrs. i work in the next town and run 2 stores. the genmgr. has caused some problems between me and sis and started an argument in the corporate office. during this argument, my dirty laundry got thrown out on the table loudly. the office clerk (who does not know the family personally) now knows dirt and shouldnt which embarrasses me and the president of the company. this is not fair treatment of an employee but what can i do? recourse anyone?

I am not a racist person but the two people in my department are black. The supervisor is black and the girl who is the same rank as me is black and has been there for a year. Since i've come back from a three day vacation, i've had to hear my boss complain everyday to be about something i've done. this past week it has been certain people in another area complaining that i don't answer the phone, leaving it off the hook or hanging up on them, who my boss gossips with. My boss threatened me the other day by stating well i don't know how many times i told you about the phones and it has went above my head this time and i'm going to give you a letter of counseling. She comes to me about situations that happened 2 to 4 days later, complains that entries aren't made. When I ask her to go over the project that was assigned to me, she told me that she didn't have time beacause she had to pick up her kid and get her self evaluation to her boss. The next day she complained that when she asked the other girl if i had done that project before, the girl stated yes and i told her, that was two months ago when i was shown it once and only once. Here it is two months later. I am starting to write down things she contradicts. I just think she picks on me because i'm white and always rushes me to lunch so she can gossip with the other girl. They are going for a training seminar next month and i haven't been asked to go...any suggestions?

Well lets see does Dictatorship mean anything? My boss is an arrogant demeaning @#$%&*! He is constantly berating people in the company, he has even said that the pay in the company is to high I am currently responsible for about 4 full time jobs and make less than $9.50/hour. He shoves most of his responsiblities on everyone else so he can bid on items on ebay all day. We have a "company messanger" as well and he believes every word this person says and if you even remotely speak bad about this person then your day's are #. He makes RUDE comments about women and the women that work for him which is all the workers here. He has made several comments that if he doesn't like you he won't fire you just make hard on you so you'll quit. Nothing is ever right unless your the tattle tail who's always right. Which by the way is this person committing slander and possibly defamation statements? I live in a small community so finding another job isn't really an option! HELP!

I find it very extreem that you need a college education to just get an inter view. Then if hired put up with a cromanion for a boss who you know had to have lied about thire education. And worse the upper management will not do any evualations of middle management personel. They run free to do whatever they want no matter who they hurt.

I think a farily effective "bad boss" is the one who under hires so they look just terrific. It is just hard on those of us who were there before this "bad boss" and truly know what we are doing. The clincher is the expectation that one of us has to train these underwhelming yo-yos.

I just had my 2nd "written warning" og things that I need to do as a manager of my staff - given to me by my boss who is rarely around. Many of the things listed are items taken out of context and listed as a "critical issue" because my boss' boss decided to magnify something into a chronic problem. Anyway, I have been told not to be hard on my staff or they won't be happy - now I am being told they don't respect me b/c I am too soft on them. I am told they don't respect me, so they are making mistakes and their mistakes or shortcomings are my fault and responsibility to change or I am going to be fired. So now I am being told to be more firm and direct, which is how i would like to be anyway. BUT I have asked for feedback and advice after being thrown into this position with no direction, explanation, etc. of what was exactly expected. I found out that it has to be mind reading and doing exactly what an owner would do - which changes daily for the same situations. Now I am being asked to come with anything that my boss may help me with. I have asked and asked and asked - the only thing I have gotten are two warnings out of left field with threats of being fired. Am I the problem here, or am I just in the wrong place? I am looking for jobs but not having any luck. Of course all this together doesn't really do that much for the self confidence factor. I haven't even been working here for a year yet, and it has been constant criticism from the beginning.

I have a boss that will not accept the black employees for promotions, but he will give the white employee promotions. This man is over many Mental Health programs and he does as he please. Blacks have degrees and he refused to give them promotions.

Yesterday after working for the company tirelessly for 6 years i was fired. Just cos i didnt get on with my new boss. Who by the way is a complete loser. We called him Dory cos like the character in Finding Nemo - he had no memory of any conversation. He lied, he schemed and cheated and the board backed him. He celebrated my departure openly. What a sicko.

An employee where I work was very upset that he had to come in on his day off.
He did not hide his frustration while talking to the assistant manager on the phone. The manager was told of the employee's reaction and she had another employee to call him a few days later to say that his helper in the kitchen called in sick when it was not true. When that employee went to work she told him that she did it to see for herself if he was mad about it.
The employee is now looking for another job.....
This is very dishonest. I liked my manager but now I cannot trust her.....

My boss is very selfish and incapable of doing the right thing. She is late everyday(by hours), leaves the building without telling anyone and usually only after she has been at work for 4 hours, which leaves some other unsuspecting manager they get to lock up which was not there plan, complains all the time about being sick, i think to get attention, never once has said good job to any manager under her in the 7 years I have been there, hardly says hello to anyone, does not fight for us managers unless there is something in it for her-we were told by her she was going to get us all araise, this went on for weeks though we never saw her actually talk to the general manager and guess what happened!!!!? she threatened to quit and got a fatty raise and has said nothing to us since that day about our raise, because she took it right from our hands basically. Selfish, unreliable, incapable, dishonest...
