hi, i quit my job because my boss was so verbally abusive. he made me feel worthless. his behavior was outrageous...we're talking temper tantrams, screaming, kicking, punching & throwing things. he used intimidation and insults. you get the picture. it was ruining my life with high blood pressure anxity, stress, loss of sleep & confidence. i was being reduced to nothing.

so i quit. i put a 2 week notice in, and even stayed an extra week and a half to help out. he's fighting my unemployment. Any suggestions?

Reply: I hate to break it to you but try getting a filler job to make up income until you find a better one. I had very bad luck with the unemployment office, and I felt guilty about being a burden on tax payers.

Reply: I don't think you can collect unemployment once you quit. The company has to terminate you in order for you to collect unemployment.

Reply: You can collect unemployment when you quit if you can prove a hostile work environment, and your environment sounds very hostile. If you haven't documented incidents, start now while they're somewhat fresh in your mind. If you can, try to get some witnesses from your ex-job who will back you up should you need to appeal. When you apply, be sure to give your version of why you quit, including as many examples of abuse as you can remember; use extra paper if necessary. And it might help to list some resources (URLs) which deal with workplace bullying to give your account more credibility.
