I had bi-lateral knee replacement surgery ,last July. Recoup took almost four months. When I returned to work ,my ex boss had replaced me with her son's 18 yr old girlfriend (I had worked in that dept. 12 years). She has since quit. Job was too much work! I ended up taking a position that I told them I wasn't qualified for and had to resign that position or have a stroke. Now when I fill out job apps,I have to list my previous place of enployment They call her,she says"wonderful" things about me and there goes another chance for employment.I had an excellent job record. I was never written up ,missed very few days prior to the surgery and worked every other weekend ,because my boss wouldn't.What recourse do I have? My unemployment is exhausted in six weeks.Any advice much appreciated..

Reply: I assume because you put the word "wonderful" in quotes you mean just the opposite. Perhaps you should contact the former boss (unless the relationship is so toxic you can't) and ask just what you did that causes such bad referrals. Done in a non-threatening way, it might work and could help clear the air.

Reply: Try having a good, trusted friend do a reference check for you...make up the questions, place of employment, and job yourself, and make sure your friend also asks "Do you have anything negative to say about this person?" Stress to your friend that he/she must write down all answers, and if they're not to your taste, post here again.

Reply: Wow what a jerk your ex boss is, im scared too when i get a different job that my boss now whom i cant stand will say mean things about me to. Hang in there and explain to the employer that is interviewing you what is going on.
