I work at Blockbuster part time and my boss wants me to spy on other members of management and employees? What should I do?He is the store manager!

Reply: Spy how? And why? If he simply wants you to keep an eye on them and report any misdeeds you happen to see, and you're uncomfortable doing this, tell him so. However, keep in mind that this may make him very angry at you and he may start having someone spy on YOU. Worse, he might fire you. (And in Canada and the US, this would be perfectly legal, however in Canada you would be entitled to some pay in lieu of notice.) I recommend that you tell your boss as gently and nicely as possible that you feel uncomfortable spying on your coworkers. If he responds negatively, you will then have to decide just how important this job is to you. If you decide you want to keep it, you'll be faced with an unfortunate choice - either spy on your coworkers, or take the issue over your boss's head to your HR rep. Good luck, whatever happens. If you have any more questions, post 'em here and I'll do what I can to help.

Reply: This is a tricky task that your manager asked you to do. Can you ask him what is his purpose of wanting you to spy your co- workers? Maybe, the manager has valid reasons for it and clarifying his intentions might help you understand why he asked you to spy and might be one way for you to find ways on how to spy effectively that your co-workers will not get angry at you.
