My never never takes responsibility for ANYTHING!

Ok, to start my boss owns and runs a small business. We are a small staff of no more than 5. The problem is no matter what happens it is never her fault! One employee was upset because the boss yealled at her in front of clients. She said she was upset because the employee made her yell at her. She can't refill the toilet paper roll when it runs out, she actually comes out of the bathroom and tells one of us. She is unable to go buy supplies after work which is at 5:30 p.m. because she doesn't have a babysitter for her 12 yr old son. And best of all she has "too much" education to go to a dollar store!

She says she pays our salaries and that means we do WHATEVER she says, period!

The latest is if she forgets to charge a client, she just adds it and the next time they come in the have a bill.

I am very outspoken and do not have the personality to just shut-up. I also am not willing to quit.

She is very intelligent, co-dependant, and attracts the type of us to try and fix her.

I am looking for a way to deal with all of this.

    Thanks, Parker

Reply: Oh yeah, she says she doesn't make any money and pays for EVERYTHING out of the business. Her kids video games, her rent, groceries, trips, and then complains that she doesn't make any money, is way unpaid. Her child is horrible! She makes up pick him up after school, take him to football practice, one he told me his mom would fire me because he was going to tell her I molested him. Once another girl was in a srive-thru and he was screaming "help she kidnapped me." He busts into rooms yelling for his mom, runs around banging stuff and very disrespectful. I wonder where he got that. We deal with her Ex-Husband and her married boyfriend. I just decided I'm crazy for working there!

Reply: And so I continue-she has ADD and we think Bi-Polar. She has taken meds in the past but according to her if the disability insurance finds out they won't ever cover her. Yes, she is good and just mmaking shit up!

Reply: Unfortunately, being a world-class jerk is not illegal, so there's nothing legally that you can do about her and her behaviour. And while she's correct in that as your boss she can "make" you do anything she wants (refill the toilet paper, go to the dollar store, add unpaid bills to the next month's invoice, and so on), she can't make you do anything illegal. From your posts, it doesn't sound like she's asked you to do anything like that yet. This sounds like an extremely toxic environment, and I recommend that you start job hunting before the toxicity starts affecting your own mental health. Sometimes I advise people on how to interact with their terrible bosses in order to effect positive behavioural changes, however if she is indeed mentally ill (ADD, bipolar, no meds, etc.) as you say, then there's not much you can do. (Unless you're a psychiatrist AND she's asked you to help her change.) If you have any more questions or comments, feel free to post them here, I try to respond quickly whenever I can.
