    Unprofessional Boss

I work for small financial services firm - 5 employees plus the owners, a husband and wife team. There is some give and take in the general day-to-day. However, staff members are being treated as if they were children living under the owners' roof.

    For example:

Sometimes the owners' dog spends the day at the office. Last Friday, they left their dog in the office after hours and the dog defecated in an associate's office. A staff member discovered this on Monday morning and informed the wife; the husband called the staff on the carpet for not cleaning it up instead of telling them. If the staff protests, it is certain that some privilege will be withdrawn as punishment.

Is there anything that can be done or should everyone just find a new job?

Reply: Unfortunately there's nothing illegal about being a jerk andor treating one's employees like dirt. This kind of behaviour is often seen in very small companies where the owners work on site beside their employees. I recommend that you try to find another job in a larger organization where this kind of behaviour isn't (usually) tolerated.

Reply: It is inappropriate but unfortunately not illegal. Animals do not belong in the workplace, if it was me I would look for another job.

Reply: Thanks for the input -- I am already looking. I don't know why the rest of the staff think they have to take it.

Reply: I have worked with family owned business. It is a difficult place of employment and the best thing to do is to look for a big company where the boss is not the owner. Some Business Owners sometimes think they have to Baby-sit you and be on top of you all day in order to be productive. They just simply do not have the core value of management practices.

Reply: Does not sound like the healthiest of environments to be around. I was temping and the owners smoked like chimneys. When I reported this to my Temp agency, they just said stick it out. I sound no get me another assignment. My suggestion would be to look for another position.
