What enables the bad boss in the first place?

Do other people agree that understanding corporate cultures and politics are as – or more – important than understanding the problem individual? I pretty well get it that my boss is a narcissist, is never wrong, and belittles people as way of achieving his ends. And I understand that management likes him because he’s talented, can be very charming when needed, and can sell. What drives me nuts is the denial, enablement, and complicity of the corporate culture. I know books on “Corporate Cultures” were big in the 80’s – does anywhere have any thoughts on books or blogs with insightful thoughts on what drives many of the modern corporate cultures?

Reply: I forgot to mention that the author of the manifesto has also written a book by the same title.

Reply: Stella, I have a boss that is just like your boss. My suggestion would be to get a book on the 12-steps and/or attend a 12-step focus meeting to learn how to deal with his unhealthly behavior and to protect you from going insane. It sure helps me.

Reply: I don't think it will give you much day to day help in your job, but if you want to understand the system better, read Riane Eisler's The Real Wealth of Nations. A primary idea: we live in what she calls a primarily dominator culture. We are moving, she believes (and we can all hope) to a partnership model. Read the book. It makes sense.
