    My incompetent boss

I've been in my current job for just over a year, and have thought my boss incompetent from the offset. In a supervision (1-1 meeting) I made a case for a payrise for myself (if you don't ask you don't get!), and she told me there was no point in her taking it further and asking as the answer would be no. I asked her to at least try, and again she said no. I explained my reasons behind it, and she said 'you better just try and find a new job then' - this is completely demotivating. I can't believe a boss would treat their staff like this, and expect them to give 100% afterwards. I am going to try and go above her to her boss, but he is the Director, and as such, doesn't actually do much of the 'controlling' in the office. In short, he will listen, but probably not do anything about it. There is one other person I could talk to, but as she is not invovled in the direct management structure, I'm worried about going out of the proper protocols and going about things the wrong way. Any advice?

Reply: I strongly suggest that you do not go over your boss's head unless you are prepared to lose your job as a result. Consider looking for a new job to understand your overall marketability and to get additional data regarding your salary.

Reply: I would recommend finding other employment. I describe this in my book and it is always worth moving on. Good leadership is a personality trait and it is not something that can be taught. I have been in your position and there is little you can do except take control of your own destiny.
