    Left a Great Company (so I thought)

    I have worked for over 18 yrs in Transportation. (Trucking) Went to work for what I thought was a good company. Opened a new terminal in a Supervisory position. Six months later a Terminal Mgr was hired with no experience. The drivers and I suffered verbal abuse daily, I ran the terminal by myself for 12 to 14 hrs a day with no lunch breaks, was even called away from my desk into the new mgrs office and was told to look at 2 flies f--king on his desk. The put-downs and degrading remarks were devastating to me emotionally. I left after 6 months. Went thru the proper channels to relay what was happening.

    It was all swept under the carpet. He still has his job and I don't. To my knowledge it has not been investigated. This guy is 39 going on 16....where do they get these people?This guy played golf 5 days a week and gave no input at all into the functions of the terminal. But.....he is a man and it is a MANS WORLD so they say. Any input?

    Reply: With any job you should expect the worse and understand any protections and rights that you have under state and federal statutes. Ask yourself what you could have done differently in your last position especially regarding working excessive hours and being exposed to degrading remarks. Going through proper channels is a good first step but it rarely produces results. Before you do this, understand that you may well not be happy with the outcome which is ok IF you know exactly how you will respond in terms of escalating the matter outside the company in view of your legal rights. Further, if the proper channels understand, without you threatening them, that the "pain" associated with them not resolving the matter properly the first time will be much greater that doing the right thing now, you might get a pleasant surprise. In fact, I would go to a few employment lawyers for a free consult and see if you now have legal recourse. If you do and if the lawyer thinks that your case is "winnable" maybe she or he will take it on on a contigency basis. Call me if you want to discuss. Gary Lahey Co-Founder 416 201 9730.
